Table 1
Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
E540(1) Low Engine Oil Refill Tank Level The switch closes when no fluid is present. The code is active. The low oil level switch signals the Electronic Control Module (ECM) if the oil level falls below a predetermined level in the oil pan. The ECM warns the operator of possible engine damage. The float closes a switch when the oil level is above a predetermined level. The ECM may modify the operation of the engine in the event of low oil level. The ECM cannot determine if the low oil level switch or associated components have failed.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Remove electrical power from the ECM.
B. Thoroughly inspect the connector for sensor. Also, thoroughly inspect ECM connector and all the connectors in the circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit for the oil level sensor.
Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Result: The harnesses and the wiring appear to be OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: There is a problem with the connectors and/or the wiring.
Repair: Repair the wiring and connectors or replace the wiring or the connectors. Ensure that all the seals are properly connected. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.
If the repair does not eliminate the problem, proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Level of the Engine Oil
A. Ensure that the correct engine oil dipstick is installed.
B. Check the engine oil level.
Oil Level
Result: The engine oil level is correct.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The engine oil level is low.
Repair: Add oil to the engine.
If the repair does not eliminate the problem, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Engine Oil Level on Cat Electronic Technician (ET)
A. Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
B. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
C. Observe the "Engine Oil Level" reading on Cat ET.
Level
Result: The "Engine Oil Level" reads "OK".
Repair: The switch signal is correct.
Result: The "Engine Oil Level" does not read "OK".
The switch signal is not correct.
Repair: Repair or replace the switch.
If the repair does not eliminate the problem, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Short the Wires at the Low Oil Level Switch
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the connector for the low oil level switch.
C. Use a wire to short terminal 1 to terminal 2. Install the wire jumper on the harness side of the connector.
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
E. Observe the status of the "Engine Oil Level" on Cat ET.
F. Remove the wire short.
G. Observe the status of the "Engine Oil Level" on Cat ET.
H. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Short
Result: Cat ET indicates "OK", when the wire short is in place. Cat ET indicates "LOW", when the wire short is removed. Cat ET recognized the input from the switch.
Repair: Temporarily replace the switch. Verify that a new switch solves the problem before you permanently install the new switch.
Result: Cat ET does not indicate "OK", when the wire short is in place. Cat ET does not indicate "LOW", when the wire short is removed. Cat ET does not recognize the input from the switch.
