Calibration Memory : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that one or more of the programmable parameters have not been programmed. The engine performance may be affected by unprogrammed parameters. The unprogrammed parameters determine the action that is taken by the ECM. The ECM may use a default torque map or the ECM may limit the engine to low idle. System configuration parameters are parameters that affect the following:
Engine power
Engine emissions
Engine subsystem characteristicsSome parameters may be changed by the customer in order to suit the needs of the specific application. Values for these parameters can be viewed on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Certain configuration parameters are stamped on the engine information plate. No password is required for programming a new ECM during the first 100 hours of service life. This 100 hour “free configuration” feature enables the customer to tailor the programmable setpoints to the requirements of the installation. Exceptions are "Fuel Limit" and "Personality Module Mismatch".Note: If the parameters that are protected with the factory passwords are changed, the Caterpillar warranty may be voided. If a programmable parameter has not been programmed, the ECM will generate a 630-2 diagnostic code. The parameters that are not programmed, or programmed outside the acceptable range are listed below the 630-2 code. These parameters will be set to the factory default value. Certain aspects of the engines performance and engine monitoring may be affected. If "Injector Trim" is displayed below a 630-2 diagnostic code on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Trim File - Install".Parameter Descriptions
ECM Identification Parameters
Equipment ID
This parameter allows the customer to enter a description into the ECM that will identify the engine. A maximum of 17 characters may be entered in the field. This parameter is only for reference by the customer. Programming this parameter is not required.Engine Serial Number
Program this parameter to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate.Note: When you are requesting factory passwords, always use the engine serial number that is resident in the ECM.ECM Serial Number
The ECM Serial Number resides in the permanent memory of the ECM. Use the service tool to access this parameter.Personality Module Part Number (Flash File)
The Personality Module Part Number (Flash File) resides in the permanent memory of the ECM. Use the service tool to access this parameter .Personality Module Release Date (Flash File)
The Personality Module Release Date (Flash File) resides in the permanent memory of the ECM. Use the service tool to access this parameter.Selected Engine Rating
Rating Number
The rating number corresponds to the set of performance maps that has been selected for this application. There may be more than one set of performance maps that are available for this engine. All of the maps are resident in the flash file for the engine.Engine/Gear Parameters
Engine Rotation
The direction of the engine rotation will be detected upon engine run time. If a new ECM) has been installed on the engine, this parameter must be programmed to the correct setting. If this parameter has not been configured, the engine will not be allowed to start.Desired Engine Rotation Direction Configuration
This parameter must be programmed in order for the engine to run. This parameter must match the as-shipped crankshaft rotation. Counterclockwise is for standard rotation and clockwise is for reverse rotation. This parameter will not be configured when the software is flashed into a new ECM. For a new ECM, the parameter must be programmed to match the as-shipped rotation in order for the engine to run.Programming this parameter will affect the Engine Rotation parameter. Program this parameter to "Counterclockwise" and the Engine Rotation parameter will designate "Forward". Program this parameter to "Clockwise" and the Engine Rotation parameter will designate "Reverse".Engine Location
If multiple engines are installed, the parameters for the engine location identify the locations of the engines.Fuel Ratio Control Offset (FRC)
This parameter controls the air fuel ratio for the engine. The air fuel ratio is controlled by limiting the rack as a function of boost pressure, engine speed, and altitude. The Fuel Ratio Control parameter permits an offset to be applied to the calculation for the altitude. The offset changes the air fuel ratio to a richer mixture or a leaner mixture.Rated Engine Speed
This parameter is programmed at the factory.Rated Fuel Volume
This parameter specifies the specific volume of fuel that is delivered to the engine at rated speed.Low Idle Speed
This parameter is programmed to specify the minimum allowable operating speed for the engine.High Idle Speed
This parameter is programmed at the factory.Fuel Correction Factor
This parameter is a programmable offset that is used to improve the accuracy of the calculated fuel usage.Desired Speed Input Configuration
The "Desired Speed Input Configuration" is used to configure the primary throttle. The remote throttle is considered as the primary throttle control for this application. The parameter is used to select the type of speed signal recognized by the ECM for the remote throttle (primary throttle) control. Select "PWM" for a PWM signal. Select "4-20 mA" for a 4-20 mA signal. The secondary throttle is considered as an optional throttle control. A switch can be installed to toggle between these two throttle controls. A global throttle control can also be installed on the application. When the global throttle control is enabled, remote throttle control and the secondary throttle control are defeated. A second switch can be installed to toggle between the global throttle control and the remote/secondary throttle controls.Secondary Throttle Enable Status
Set this parameter to "Enable" in order to configure a secondary throttle for the engine. A switch can be installed in order to switch between the remote throttle control and the secondary throttle control. The (switch input) at the ECM must be grounded in order to select the secondary throttle control. Allow the switch input to float in order to select the remote throttle control.Remote Throttle Control Install
Set this parameter to "Installed" in order to configure a global throttle control. A PWM throttle control must be wired to the ECM
