Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Establish communication between Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool and the Electronic Control Module (ECM) . Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Warranty Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing any codes.
Code
Result: A E1092, E1095, 412, or 2659 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: There are no associated codes.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Perform a "EGR System Test"
A. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes. Use Cat ET to perform an "EGR System Test" to verify that the problem is resolved.
Test Completed Successfully
Result: The "EGR System Test" did not complete due to a E1092 (2) or 412-16 code.
Repair: Repair the vent line or replace the vent line from the cooler to the shunt tank. Remove the exhaust lines from the inlet and the outlet of the cooler. Inspect the internal passage of the cooler for coolant. If coolant is found, replace the cooler.
Repair: Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes. Use Cat ET to perform an "EGR System Test" to verify that the problem is resolved.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The "EGR System Test" completed successfully.
Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Inspect the NRS Coolers for Discolored Paint
Note: Normal outlet temperatures should not exceed 150° C (302° F).
NRS Coolers
Result: There is not discoloration seen on either NRS cooler.
Repair: Apply temperature stickers (A) to the locations shown in the illustrations above. Follow the results below pending what temperatures are seen on the temperature stickers.
Result: Neither of the NRS coolers are running over the temperature limit.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: Only one of the NRS coolers are discolored or exceeding the temperature limit.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: Both of the NRS coolers are discolored or exceeding the temperature limit.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
4. Test Coolant Flow on NRS Cooler
A. Measure the water pressure at NRS inlet pressure port (B).
B. Check the following components for plugging or a source of insufficient coolant flow:
- Left-side cooler water supply line
- Left-side NRS cooler passages
-Left-side coolant supply elbow to engine
- Water line to the NRS cooler
- Coolant vent lines
- Power train oil cooler
Coolant Flow
Result: There is not sign of plugging in the associated parts.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: There are signs of plugging apparent in the associated components.
Repair: Clean the parts as necessary.
1. After cleaning the parts, remeasure the NRS cooler temperatures using Test Step 3.
If the NRS cooler temperatures are below the temperature limit, proceed to Test Step 6.
If the NRS cooler temperatures are above the temperature limit, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the Cooling System Associated Components for Proper Operation
A. Check the following components that can cause an increase in coolant temperature:
- Check for proper coolant level
- Check the water pump group for proper flow
- Check or replace the thermostat if temperatures are elevated
- Check for a plugged radiator
Cooling System Components
Result: All associated components were found to be working properly.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: A component was found not to be operating properly.
Repair: Repair or replace the component as necessary.
1. After repairing or replacing an associated component, remeasure the NRS cooler temperatures using Test Step 3.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Perform the "Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Test"
A. Remove the NRS cooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for more information.
B. Perform a leak test on the cooler. Refer to System Operation Testing and Adjusting, "Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Test" for the proper procedure.
"Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Test"
Result: The cooler has internal leakage.
Repair: Replace the cooler. Replace the connection for the bellows at the inlet of the cooler.
Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes. Use Cat ET to perform an "EGR System Test" to verify that the problem is resolved.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The cooler did not have internal leakage.
Repair: Clean the cooler. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Clean" for the proper procedure to clean the cooler for the NRS.
