Direct Electric Starting
The starting system available for the 3500 Locomotive Engines is an electric starting system with left hand mounted dual heavy duty motors. Unaided starting can be accomplished down to a temperature of 10°C (50°F). If a potential for lower starting temperature exists, consult your Caterpillar dealer.
Ether aid lines Heating of jacket water, crankcase oil, fuel, and/or the use of extra battery capacity or ether starting aid may be required to assist starting in cold temperatures.
Do not engage starter when flywheel is turning. For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, make provision to stop the engine should an engine overspeed situation occur.
Prelube Pump Operation (If Equipped)
* The engine is equipped with an electrically operated prelube system.* If the fuel filters have been replaced during a maintenance interval or the engine has been stoped for more than 48 hours, prime the fuel system. Refer to "Priming the System" in this publication for information.
Typical Installation1. Move the prelube switch to the engine prelube position. The locomotive interlock for starting guarantees that the throttle control is in Low Idle Notch position.2. After prelube indicator light illuminates, the engine start system is enabled. There will be a time delay until the prelube pressure energizes the start circuit. The prelube pump will remain running until the engine is started or the prelube cancel switch is engaged.3. Move the starter switch to the START position. After the prelube light comes on, engage engine start and release the start switch as soon as the engine begins to start. The engine prelube light will go out and the prelube pump will stop. The indicator lamp turns on when prelube is complete.4. As soon as the engine starts, be sure oil pressure registers on the gauge. If the engine will not start, or if oil pressure does not raise within 15 seconds, stop the engine. Refer to the "Troubleshooting" section in the Service Manual.5. Allow the engine to idle for three to five minutes, or until the water temperature gauge has begun to rise.
If engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch or button and wait two minutes to allow the starting motors to cool before using again.
* Do not apply load to the engine or increase engine speed until the oil pressure gauge indicates at least normal pressure. * Operate the engine at low load until all systems reach operating temperatures. Check all gauges during the warmup period.Starting From External Electrical Source
Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow cable ends to contact each other or the engine.Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.
When using jumper cables, be sure to connect in parallel: NEGATIVE (-) to NEGATIVE (-) and POSITIVE (+) to POSITIVE (+).Do not allow the free end of jumper cables to touch the engine or other objects grounded to the engine. This helps avoid sparks. This engine has a 64 V-DC starting system. Use only equal voltage for boost starting. The use of a welder or higher voltage will damage the electrical system.
1. Connect one end of cable to the POSITIVE (+) (ungrounded) terminal of the battery of the engine. Connect the other end to the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the power source.2. Connect one end of the second cable to the NEGATIVE (-) terminal of the power source. Connect the other end to the starter ground terminal of the engine.3. Start the engine, using the regular procedure.4. Disconnect the cable from the starter ground terminal first. Disconnect the other end from the NEGATIVE (-) terminal of the power source. Disconnect the cable from the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the battery. Disconnect the other end from the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the power source.
