Start By:a. remove valve cover basesb. remove unit injectorsc. remove rocker arm assemblies & push rodsd. remove unit injector sleevesFluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The cylinder head must be removed and a new spacer plate gasket must be installed anytime the fluid manifold has been removed. See the topic "Remove & Install Cylinder Heads" in this Module.
1. Remove tube assembly (1). Cap and plug all openings immediately. 2. Disconnect tube assembly (2). Cap and plug all openings immediately. 3. Disconnect hose assembly (3). Cap and plug all openings immediately. 4. Remove cylinder head bolts (4) and the washers. 5. Attach Tool (A), chains and a suitable lifting device to fluid manifold (5). When the fluid manifold is removed the cylinder head gasket must be replaced.6. Remove small bolts (6) and remove fluid manifold (5). The weight of the fluid manifold for the 3408E engine is approximately 36 kg (79 lb). The weight of the fluid manifold for the 3412E engine is approximately 54 kg (119 lb). The following steps are for the installation of the fluid manifold.
3408E Engine Fluid Manifold
3412E Engine Fluid Manifold
The bottom face of the fluid manifold and the top face of the cylinder head must be free of oil, fuel, water, dirt, assembly compounds and any other contaminants during assembly.
7. Apply a continuous film of 1U-8846 Liquid Gasket Maker to the shaded areas of the fluid manifold shown in illustrations D38045 and D38040. The sealant is to be applied to the bottom face of the fluid manifold only. The sealant is permitted on the entire face of the fluid manifold. 8. Attach Tool (A), chains and a suitable lifting device to fluid manifold (5). The weight of the fluid manifold for the 3408E engine is approximately 36 kg (79 lb). The weight of the fluid manifold for the 3412E engine is approximately 54 kg (119 lb).9. Put fluid manifold (5) in position and install bolts (6). 10. Install cylinder head bolts (4).
3412E Cylinder Head (Numerical Sequence)11. Tighten the cylinder head bolts for the 3412E engine as follows: a. Tighten bolts 1 through 26 in numerical sequence to a torque of 270 15 N m (200 11 lb ft).b. Tighten bolts 1 through 26 in numerical sequence to a torque of 450 15 N m (330 11 lb ft).c. Again tighten bolts 1 through 26 again in numerical sequence to a torque of 450 15 N m (330 11 lb ft).d. Tighten nuts 27 through 39 in numerical sequence to a torque of 45 7 N m (33 5 lb ft).
3408E Cylinder Head (Numerical Sequence)12. Tighten the cylinder head bolts for the 3408E engine as follows: a. Tighten bolts 1 through 18 in numerical sequence to a torque of 270 15 N m (200 11 lb ft).b. Tighten bolts 1 through 18 in numerical sequence to a torque of 450 15 N m (330 11 lb ft).c. Again tighten bolts 1 through 18 again in numerical sequence to a torque of 450 15 N m (330 11 lb ft).d. Tighten nuts 19 through 27 in numerical sequence to a torque of 45 7 N m (33 5 lb ft). 13. Connect hose assembly (3). 14. Connect tube assembly (2). 15 . Install tube assembly (1).End By:a. install unit injector sleevesb. install rocker arm assemblies & push rodsc. install unit injectorsd. install valve cover bases
