Table 1
Event Code
Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
E368(1) High Inlet Air Temperature The inlet air temperature has exceeded the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
E368(2) High Inlet Air Temperature The code is logged.
The engine power is derated. If the engine is shut down due to a high inlet air temperature, the power to the engine ECM must be cycled in order to restart the engine.Probable Causes
Diagnostic codes and event codes
High ambient air temperature
High Coolant Temperature
Inlet Manifold Air Temperature Sensor
High Air restriction
Sensor circuit component problemRecommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
E368
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: An E368 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Check for High Ambient Air Temperature
A. Determine if the ambient air temperature is within the design specifications for the cooling system.
Temperature
Result: The ambient air temperature is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The ambient air temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the cause of the high ambient air temperature and correct the problem.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Check for High Coolant Temperature
A. Check for a high coolant temperature for the engine.
Temperature
Result: Coolant temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature is High " for information that is related to high coolant temperature problems.
Result: Coolant temperature is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
4. Check the Inlet Manifold Air Temperature Sensor
A. Use Cat ET to compare the value for the "Inlet Air Temperature" parameter to the ambient air temperature, under the following conditions:
- Engine OFF
- Engine cool
- Sensor removed from the engine
Parameter
value
Result: The value for the "Inlet Air Temperature" parameter does not closely match the ambient temperature.
Repair: Replace the sensor with a sensor that is known to be good.
Verify that the fault is eliminated.
Proceed to the next step.
6. Check for High Air restriction and/or High Altitude
A. When the inlet air pressure is low, the turbocharger works harder in order to achieve the desired inlet air pressure. This increases are inlet temperature.
B. Measure the inlet air pressure while the engine is operating under load. Refer to Technical Marketing Information (TMI), for specific data.
Inlet air restriction
Result: The inlet air pressure is within the listed specification.
Proceed to the next step
Result: The inlet air pressure is NOT within listed specification.
Check for plugged air filters. Check for obstructions to the air inlet. Make the necessary repairs. Verify that the problem is resolved.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
6. Check the Sensor Circuit Components
A. Inspect the suspected sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
Component
Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.
Repair: Replace the suspected sensor.
