Information:
Located on electronic governor control box.The Electronic Locomotive Control box provides some system diagnostics. It can detect generator voltage and current sense, rack position sensor, engine speed sensor, high and low traction motor current sense and personality module control box faults. These faults are indicated by red lamps (LED) which are visible through a lens in the control box lid.The eight light emitting diodes (LED) located on the electronic governor control box indicate engine status and provide diagnostic information from the governor control. The electronic system controls and monitors all engine functions including engine speed governing and generator excitation control. If the engine is shut down by the Electronic Locomotive Control, the fault which caused the shutdown will be indicated by the LED's. Some control box, personality module and engine speed sensor faults can cause a shutdown. If the engine is shut down by operator request or a protection device in the locomotive electrical system, any Electronic Locomotive Control system fault(s) existing at the time of shutdown will be displayed. Multiple faults are displayed one at a time for two seconds each except for control box faults, which are displayed independently.* High Coolant Water Temperature (Power) Derate* Altitude (Power) Derate (If Equipped)* Voltage Regulation* Current Regulation* Power Matching (to maintain compatibility with other locomotives in a multiple unit consist)* Wheelslip Regulation* Automatic Sanding* Dynamic Brake Field Current Regulation* Dynamic Brake Grid Current Regulation* Dynamic Brake Grid Protection* Locomotive Overspeed Limiting (road speed limiting)* Gross Engine Power Control in High Notches (Throttle Notch 4 thru 8)* Traction Power Control in Low Notches (Throttle Notch 1 thru 3)Personality Module Fault
This diagnostic system indicates a defective or improperly programmed module. See your Caterpillar dealer for more information regarding a Personality Module Fault.Engine Speed Sensor Fault
When the engine speed sensor can no longer detect engine speed (rpm), a fault light is illuminated on the PEEC control box and the governor will shutdown the engine. The problem must be corrected before restarting the engine. Refer to the "Caterpillar Electronic Locomotive Control System II," SENR3941 for more information.Current Sense and Voltage Sense Fault (Generator)
Typical Wheelslip ModuleThis diagnostic is part of the wheelslip regulation and indicates the system cannot detect or sense an adequate current or voltage from the traction alternator. It also monitors and records high traction motor current and/or low traction motor current faults.Rack Position Sensor Fault
When the engine rack position sensor can no longer detect or measure engine rack position, a fault code on the PEEC control box is displayed. The governor electronics will refer to a "back-up" limp home mode and allow the engine to be operated until service can be performed. The locomotive may experience some slight power differences, but can continue to operate at all notch settings. However, once the engine is shutdown, the problem must be corrected before restarting the engine. Refer to the "Caterpillar Electronic Locomotive Control System," SENR3941 for more information.EG-10PC-3 Actuator
This actuator is used with the PEEC Electronic Governor Control Box.The EG-10PC-3 Actuator is an electro-hydraulic, engine driven device that mechanically controls the fuel rack linkage with hydraulic power using the engine oil supply. The actuator is connected to the fuel system by linkage. It changes the electrical input from the Electronic Locomotive Control Box to mechanical output that changes the engine fuel setting. For example, if the engine speed is more than the notch (speed) setting, the control will decrease fuel to the engine. There is only limited control and adjustment to the EG-10PC-3. That adjustment can be made using the external needle valve for calibration. Not all actuators used with the Electronic Locomotive Control have a needle valve adjustment. Clockwise (CW) slows engine response; Counterclockwise (CCW) increases engine response (if equipped).
Do not completely close needle valve setting with the engine running. Typical setting is 3/4 turn open (CCW).
Refer to the Service Manual and/or "Caterpillar Electronic Locomotive Control System", SENR3941 for information on this procedure and the system operation or see your Caterpillar dealer.High Water Temperature Derate Feature
This function is part of the Gross Engine Power Control. It progressively reduces the engine power output from 0 to 25% with increasing water temperatures.A fault in the derate module will illuminate a fault light and be logged into the PEEC governor control system. However, this is not a fault diagnostic.Altitude Derate Feature
This feature will progressively reduce gross engine power as the altitude increases. This is not a fault diagnostic, but is an automatic system feature.
