Raise the cab. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cab - Tilt". The information is in this manual.
Remove the crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard- Remove & Install". The information is in this manual.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant from the radiator. The capacity of the coolant system is 63 L (17 US gal) .
Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the oil system.

Remove drain plug (1) from the engine oil cooler. Drain the excess coolant in a suitable container, as shown.

This is a view of the transmission oil cooler from a point under the cab and behind the transmission oil cooler.
Remove drain plug (2) and the O-ring seal from the transmission oil cooler. Drain the excess coolant in a suitable container. Remove drain plug (3) and the O-ring seal from the transmission oil cooler. Drain the excess oil from the transmission oil cooler.

Remove two bolts (4) that secure mounting brackets (5) to the engine oil cooler. Move mounting brackets (5) and hose bundle (6) aside.

Remove two bolts (7) that secure hose adapter (8) to the engine oil cooler. The top bolt (7) will stay in hose adapter (8) . Move hose adapter (8) aside. Remove the gasket from the hose adapter.

Remove bolt (10) , and the nut that secures two hose clips (9) to the mounting bracket. Move hose bundle (6) and hose clips (9) aside.

Remove two bolts (12) that secure pipe (13) to the engine oil cooler. Loosen hose clamp (14) that secures pipe (13) in hose (15) .
Remove pipe (13) and gasket (11) from hose (15) and the engine oil cooler.

Attach a nylon lifting strap and a hoist to transmission oil cooler (16) , as shown.

Remove four bolts (20) and two half clamps (19) from transmission oil cooler (16) . Remove six bolts (17) that secure water bonnet (18) to transmission oil cooler (16) .
