Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Lower the scraper bowl to the ground and engage the parking brake. Chock the wheels in order to prevent the machine from moving. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Open the side access door to the engine.

Loosen two nuts (1) on rod (2) so that block (3) releases the tension on V-belt (4) .
Loosen bolt (5) . Loosen bolt (6) . Remove bolt (7) , the washers, and the nuts from block (3) . Remove bolt (5) and the washer that secures guard assembly (8) to alternator (9) . Remove guard assembly (8) from alternator (9) . Rotate alternator (9) toward the engine. Remove V-belt (4) from the pulley on the alternator. Reinstall bolt (5) .
Remove bolt (10) and the washer that secures rod (2) to the bracket. Remove the rod, the nuts, and the block from the bracket.

Pull back boot (11) . Remove bolt (12) from alternator (9) . Disconnect wire (13) from the terminal on the alternator.

Remove bolt (14) from alternator (9) . Disconnect wire (15) from the alternator. Disconnect wire (16) from alternator (9) .

Remove bolts (5) and (6) and the washers that secure alternator (9) to bracket (17) . Remove alternator (9) from the machine.

Remove bolt (18) that secures the washer, harness clip (19) , and bracket (17) to the gear cover. Remove two bolts (20) that secure bracket (17) to the gear cover. Remove bracket (17) from the gear cover.Installation Procedure
Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Position bracket (17) to the gear cover. Install two bolts (20) that secure bracket (17) to the gear cover. Install bolt (18) that secures the washer, harness clip (19) , and bracket (17) to the gear cover.

Position alternator (9) to bracket (17) . Install bolts (5) and (6) and the washers that secure alternator (9) to bracket (17) . Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

Connect wire (16) to alternator (9) . Position wire (15) to the alternator. Install bolt (14) that secures wire (15) to alternator (9) .

Position wire (13) to the terminal on the alternator. Install bolt (12) that secures wire (13) to alternator (9) . Push boot (11) over the terminal.

Position rod (2) , the nuts, and the block to the bracket. Install bolt (10) that secures the rod to the bracket.
Rotate alternator (9) toward the engine. Install V-belt (4) to the pulley on the alternator. Remove bolt (5) . Position guard assembly (8) to alternator (9) . Install bolt (5) and the washer that secures guard assembly (8) to alternator (9) . Do not tighten bolt (5) at this time. Install bolt (7) , the washers, and the nuts to block (3) .
Tighten two nuts (1) on rod (2) so that block (3) creates the correct tension on V-belt (4) . Refer to Operation and Maintenance, SEBU7143 for the correct V-belt tension. Tighte
