Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools and Shop Products Guide, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.1. Open the hood assembly, and lock it in the "Open" position.
Hot engine oil can cause personal injury if it contacts the skin. Use caution when draining the oil.
Drain the engine oil from the oil filter and the oil filter base in a suitable container for storage or disposal.2. Loosen bolt (2) to drain the oil filter and the oil filter base.3. Disconnect drain line (6).4. Remove two nuts (3) and the washers.5. Remove six bolts (4) and the washers.6. Remove engine oil filter (1) and oil filter base (5) as a unit. Check the O-rings for wear or damage. Replace if necessary. Check the filter base for clogging and cracks. Use Tool (A) if the oil filter is to be removed. The following steps are for the installation of the engine oil filter and the oil filter base.7. If the engine oil filter was removed, apply engine oil to the gasket when installing the engine oil filter. When the gasket contacts the engine oil filter base, tighten 3/4 to 1 turn more.8. Check the gasket on the filter base and replace with new part, if necessary. Install engine oil filter (1) and oil filter base (5) as a unit.9. Install six bolts (4) and the washers.10. Install two nuts (3) and the washers.11. Tighten bolt (2). Refer to the Topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation and Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the engine oil.12. Close the hood assembly.Disassemble & Assemble Engine Oil Filter & Oil Filter Base
Start By:a. remove engine oil filter and oil filter base 1. Position filter base (1) and filter (2) on a suitable work bench.2. Use Tool (A) to remove filter (2) from filter base (1). Check the filter base for clogging and cracks. Replace if necessary.3. Check the gasket for wear or damage. Replace filter (2). Replace the gasket and the filter with new replacement parts. 4. Remove plug (3), spring (6), piston (4), pressure relief valve (7) and bushing (5) from the oil filter base. The following steps are for the assembly of the engine oil filter and the oil filter base. Check the filter base for clogging and cracks. Replace if necessary. Check gasket for wear or damage.5. Install plug (3), spring (6), piston (4), pressure relief valve (7) and bushing (5) to the oil filter base.6. Apply engine oil to gasket (8) when installing the engine oil filter.
