Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below. This procedure applies to 384-9906 Crankshaft, 384-9907 Crankshaft, 384-9908 Crankshaft in dealer parts inventory with a date code starting with 19E01XXXX through 20E03XXXX with a packaging date prior to 16 April 2020. Crankshafts packaged on or after 16 April 2020 have been inspected by the supplier. Do not inspect crankshafts already installed in engines, short blocks, or long blocks.Note: This information supersedes Technical Information Bulletin, M0118361, "Crankshaft May Have Debris or Burrs in Oil Galleries on All C27, C32, and 3412 Series Engines" which has been canceled.

Example of date code on crankshaft packaging
Crankshafts with a packaging date of 16 April 2020(D16M04Y20) or later are known good parts and no inspection is required.
Illustration 2 g06551717Illustration 2 shows examples of where the date stamps can be found on crankshafts affected.Problem
The crankshaft part numbers listed in Table 1 may have debris and/or burrs remaining in the oil passages. Currently a production start/stop date has not been identified.

If a loose part from Table 1 is available at the dealership, use the inspection procedure below to document the condition of the part prior to installation. If an issue is identified, isolate the crankshaft and use the following procedure to document the issue through the Dealer Solution Network (DSN).
Create a Global Dealer Solution Network (GDSN) Product Health Service Request (SR) with the priority of "Product Inquiry/Informational".
Choose "Base Engine" for the "Workgroup/SS" field.
Perform the inspection procedure in this Technical Information Bulletin. Add any photos of the failure and applied failure analysis information to the ticket.
Document the CPI number "468647" in the "CPI" field.
Enter the M0119927 media number in the "Description" and "Title" fields.
Enter the part numbers in the "Parts" field.
Enter the crankshaft serial number in the "Related" section under the "Serialized Components" option.
Close the ticket without submitting to Caterpillar after all information has been attached.Recent Failure Procedure
If a recent failure of one of the serial numbers listed above is determined by Applied Failure Analysis to be a possible bottom end failure, use the following procedure.

Illustration 3 g06539857Illustration 3 shows the locations of the oil passages in the crankshaft. A borescope (T1) should be inserted from all entries into a passage.
Record the crankshaft serial number.
Borescope all drilled oil passages in the crankshaft journals, looking for burrs, or loose material.Note: Oil passages must be inspected from both directions to confirm whether an issue is present.
Main oil passages 2, 3, 5, and 6 have an angle in the middle of the passage which needs to be inspected from both directions.
Main oil passages 1, 4, and 7 are straight passages that need to be inspected from both directions.

For oil passage 3, inspect to the intersection with all drilling for number 4.
For oil passage 4, inspect all the way to the main journal oil passage. Note all findings for oil passage 4.
Capture images of all unusual findings using camera (T2).
