start by:a) remove flywheel housingb) remove valve covers 1. Bend the locks away from bolts (1). Remove bolts (1), plate (2) and oil pump idler gear (3) from the back of the flywheel housing. 2. Use tooling (A) and a press to remove bearing (4) from the oil pump idler gear. 3. Bend the locks away from bolts (5). Remove bolts (5) and shaft (6) from the flywheel housing. 4. Remove thrust washers (7) from the flywheel housing. Use tooling (C) to remove bearings (8) from the flywheel housing.5. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise (as seen from the rear of the engine) to top dead center compression position No. 1 piston. See LOCATING TOP DEAD CENTER COMPRESSION POSITION FOR NO. 1 PISTON in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.6. Install the camshaft timing pins in the right and left inlet camshafts. Remove the fuel injection pump camshaft timing pin from its storage hole, and install the pin in the timing hole in the pump camshaft. 7. Remove thrust washer (9) and cluster gear (10) from the shaft. Remove the other thrust washer from the shaft.8. Remove water pump idler gear (11) and water pump drive gear (12).
To prevent piston and valve contact, do not turn the crankshaft with timing gears removed and the camshafts installed.
9. Use tooling (A) and a press to remove bearing (13) from the cluster gear. 10. Remove cover (14) over the variable timing unit.11. Remove O-ring seals (15). 12. Remove three nuts and washers (16) that hold the water pump to the timing gear plate. 13. Bend the locks away from bolts (18). Remove bolts (17) and (18) and remove rear timing gear plate (19). 14. Remove cage (20) from the back of the timing gear plate. 15. Remove thrust washer (21) from the cage. Use tooling (C) to remove bearing (22) from the cage. 16. Remove oil line (24). Bend the locks away from bolts (23) and remove the bolts. Remove shaft (25) and camshaft drive idler gear (26). 17. Use tooling (B) and a press to remove bearing (27) from the gear.Install Rear Timing Gears And Plate
Put clean SAE 30 oil on all bearings, shafts and gears before assembly. 1. Use tooling (B) and a press to install the bearing in the camshaft drive idler gear. The notches in the bearing must be in alignment with notches (1) in the gear within 2°. The bearing must not extend beyond either face of the gear.
Be sure the oil passages in shaft (3) are clear. Be sure the timing pin is installed in the fuel injection pump camshaft. Be sure the camshaft timing pin is installed in the right and left inlet camshafts. Do not turn the crankshaft with the timing gears removed and the camshafts installed.
2. Put idler gear (2) and shaft (3) in position on the engine and install the lock and bolts that hold the shaft in place. 3. Install oil line (4). 4. Use tooling (A) and a press to install bearing (5) in the cage to a depth of .062 in. (1.6 mm).5. If new dowels for thrust washer (6) are installed, install the dowels so .141 in. (3.6 mm) extends above the cage. Install thrust washer (6) on the cage. 6. Put cage (7) and the gasket in position on the timing gear plate and install the nuts and washers that hold it in place. 7. Install a new gasket (8). Cut the bottom of the gasket even with the bottom of the cylinder block. Install a new gasket on the water pump. Put timing gear plate (9) in position and install the bolts, nuts and locks that hold it in place. 8. Install the gasket and cover (10) over the variable timing unit.9. Install O-ring seals (11) and put clean oil on them. 10. Install the three washers and nuts (12) that hold the water pump to the timing gear plate. 11. Use tooling (A) and a press to install the bearing in cluster gear (13) until the bearing is .06 in. (1.5 mm) below the top face of the gear as shown. 12. Install thrust washer (14) on the shaft for the cluster gear. Be sure the oil hole in the shaft is clear.
Always be sure that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center compression stroke, and the timing pins are installed in the timing grooves (slots) in the left and right inlet camshafts and the fuel injection pump camshaft before the cluster gear is installed. The engine can be damaged if this procedure is not followed.
13. Put cluster gear (13) in position with the "V" marks on the crankshaft gear and cluster gear in alignment. Install the other thrust washer (15).14. Remove the timing pins from the left and right inlet camshafts and the fuel injection pump camshaft. Install the pins in their storage locations. 15. Install thrust washer (16) on the water pump and O-ring seal (17) on the water pump shaft.16. Install gear (18) on the water pump shaft as shown. 17. Be sure the thrust washer (19) is in position. Install water pump idler gear (20) as shown.18. Be sure all the oil passages in the flywheel housing are clear. 19. Use tooling (A) to install bearing (21) in the flywheel housing to a depth of .062 in. (1.6 mm).20. If new dowels for thrust washers (22) are installed, install the dowels so .14 in. (3.6 mm) extends above the flywheel housing. Install thrust washers (22) on the flywheel housing. 21. Be sure the oil passage in shaft (23) is clear and put the shaft in position on the flywheel housing as shown. Install the locks and bolts that hold the shaft in place. 22. Use tooling (A) and a press to install the bearing in the oil pump idler gear with the notches in the bearing in alignment with notches (24) in the gear within 4°. Install the bearing to a depth of .060 in. (1.5 mm) below the end of the gear
