(4) Piston cooling jets
(5) Crankshaft
(6) Main bearing cap
(7) Bolts for the main bearing cap The cylinders in the left side of cylinder block (1) are positioned at a 65 degree angle from the right side of the engine.Spacer plate (2) is sandwiched between gaskets and mounts between the machined surface of the cylinder head and the deck of the cylinder block.Crankcase covers (3) allow access to the connecting rods, to the main bearings, and to the piston cooling jets. When the covers are removed, all of the openings can be used for inspection and for service.Piston cooling jets (4) are mounted to the cylinder block inside the crankcase. There is one piston cooling jet for each cylinder. The oil spray from the jets is used to provide lubrication to the piston. The oil spray is also used to cool the piston rings.Main bearing caps (6) are used to secure crankshaft (5) into the cylinder block. The main bearing caps are fastened to the cylinder block with main bearing studs (7). Each main bearing cap is fastened to the cylinder block with two studs per cap.Cylinder Liners

(13) Piston pin
(14) Connecting rod For this engine, the cylinder is serviceable as a parts kit. Filler band (9) fits into machined surface that is at the top of the outside of cylinder liner (8). The filler band seals the top of the liner to the cylinder block. Three O-ring seals (10) are used to create a seal between the mid-section of the cylinder liner and the cylinder block. There are machined grooves in the outer wall of the sleeve that accommodate each O-ring seal. Engine coolant flows around the cylinder liners in order to dissipate heat that is created in the combustion chamber during combustion. These O-ring seals are used to provide a seal around the cooling jacket. The cylinder pack consists of the piston, piston rings, piston pin, piston rod, and cylinder liner.Piston rings (11) are installed in the ring grooves that are located in the top portion of piston (12). The piston rings fit tightly inside the cylinder. The two top rings seal the combustion chamber as the piston moves in the cylinder. The bottom ring scrapes the oil from the cylinder liner. The piston is attached to the small end of connecting rod (14). Piston pin (13) is used to create an articulated joint between the piston and the connecting rod. Two studs are pressed into the large end of the piston rod. These studs are used to secure the large end of the connecting rod around the rod bearing journal of the crankshaft. To create the cap of the connecting rod, the rod is cut along the centerline radius of the large end of the rod. Each rod and rod cap are a matched pair and are numbered for identification. Care must be taken to protect the machined surfaces of the cap and rod while disassembled.Cylinder Heads

(19) Cylinder head
(20) Valve seat inserts
(21) Cylinder head gasket
(22) Water seals Valve mechanism cover (15) is bolted to valve cover base (16). The cover and base assembly are bolted to cylinder head (19). Remove the valve mechanism cover in order to service the injectors and the valve train components. Certain repairs may also require removal of the valve cover base. Rocker shaft dowels (17) are pressed into the cylinder head. The dowels are used to position the rocker shaft assembly on the cylinder head. Valve guide bushings (18) are mechanically pressed into the cylinder heads. Also, valve seat inserts (20) are mechanically pressed into the cylinder heads. There are two valve seats for the inlet valves and two valve seats for the exhaust valves for each cylinder. Cylinder head gasket (21) is used to seal the cylinder head to the cylinder block and to the liner. The cylinder head gasket seals the combustion gases that are in the combustion chamber. Several water seals (22) are used to seal coolant passages and oil passages that transfer fluids between the cylinder block and the cylinder head.
