Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
E085(1) Engine Shutdown Overridden The engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects ground on the input for the maintenance clear switch. If an engine derate or an engine shutdown is active, the derate or the shutdown will be overridden.
The code is logged.
E097(1) Engine Derate Overridden System OperationIf full engine power is needed, the maintenance clear switch allows the user to override an engine derate or an engine shutdown. The wire for the maintenance clear switch is routed from the ECM to the customer connector. The wire is then routed to a customer supplied switch.

Test Step 1. Check for an "Active" Event Code
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Turn the main disconnect switch to the ON position.
Monitor the event codes on Cat ET. Check and record any event codes. Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the event codes to become active.
Determine if one of the following event codes is active:
E085
E097Expected Result:A E085 event code or a E097 event code is active.Results:
OK - A E085 event code or a E097 event code is active. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - An event code is not active but a problem is suspected with the circuit for the maintenance clear switch. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 2. Check the Position of the Maintenance Clear Switch
Visually check the position of the maintenance clear switch. Expected Result:The maintenance clear switch is in the ON position. Results:
OK - The maintenance clear switch is in the ON position.Repair: Determine the reason that the maintenance clear switch is in the ON position.STOP
Not OK - The maintenance clear switch is in the OFF position. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check the Signal Wire between the Maintenance Clear Switch and the ECM
Disconnect the wire L460-YL(Yellow) from the maintenance clear switch.
The short circuit is in the wire between the maintenance clear switch and the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - An event code is not active.Repair: The short circuit is most likely in the maintenance clear switch. Replace the switch.STOPTest Step 4. Check the Signal Wire between the Customer Connector and the ECM
Disconnect the wire L460-YL(Yellow) from terminal 17 of the customer connector.
The short circuit is in the wire between the customer connector and the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - An event code is not active.Repair: The short circuit is between the maintenance clear switch and the customer connector. Replace the wire or repair the wire.STOPTest Step 5. Check the Signal at the ECM
Disconnect the wire L460-YL(Yellow) from the P2-19 ECM connector.
Monitor the event codes on Cat ET. Check and record any event codes. Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the event codes to become active.
Determine if one of the following event codes is active:
E085
E097Expected Result:An E085 event code or a E097 event code is active.Results:
OK - A E085 event code or a E097 event code is active. The short circuit is in the ECM.Repair: Replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM - Replace".STOP
Not OK - An event code is not active.Repair: The short circuit is between the customer connector and the ECM. Replace the wire or repair the wire.STOP
