(12) Bypass valve for engine oil filters Engine oil is drawn through suction screen (9) to engine oil pump (8). The engine oil pump is a gear-type pump which generates pressure for the engines lubrication system. The engine oil pump is bolted to the bottom of the engine block inside the engines crankcase. The front gear train of the engine drives the engine oil pumps gear. A pressure relief valve (7) is located within the engine oil pump group. The pressure relief valve controls the engine oil pressure to a maximum of 600 kPa (87 psi). Excess engine oil that is bypassed by the oil pump is returned to engine oil pan (8). Pressurized engine oil is directed through engine oil cooler (10). The oil cooler lowers the temperature of the engine oil before the oil passes through engine oil filters. When a pressure differential of approximately 144 kPa (21 psi) is reached, bypass valve (11) will allow oil to bypass the cooler.Engine oil filters (1) clean the oil before the oil enters the passages that are within the engine block. When a pressure differential of approximately 129 kPa (19 psi) is reached, the bypass valve will allow oil to bypass the oil filters. Two spin-on oil filters are used for these engines. The filters are located on the right side of the engine.

(17) Oil port to main gallery
(18) Oil supply for shaft Engine oil flows from the oil filters into the oil gallery through port (17). These ports are located on both sides of the engine block. Main oil gallery (15) supplies oil to crankshafts main bearing journals (16) through passages that are drilled into the engine block. Passages that are drilled into the crankshaft connect the flow of oil from the main bearings to the rod bearings. A passage that is drilled through each of the piston rods connects the flow of oil from the rod bearing to the piston pin bearing. Oil passage (14) allows oil to flow. Piston cooling jets are also utilized in order to reduce the temperature of the piston. Each of the cooling jets direct a stream of engine oil to the bottom side of the piston. Also, engine oil flows into passages that are located directly above the crankshafts main journals. 1, 2 and 7. The first two passages provide lubrication for the camshaft gear assembly shaft (18).

(19) Oil supply passage to cylinder head
(20) Oil supply to valve components
(21) Oil supply for camshaft bearings Drilled passage (13) provides oil to the cross-drilled passages. The passages are located at the front and rear of the engine, on the top deck of the engine block. Oil passages that are drilled into the cylinder heads allow oil to flow to the camshaft bearings. Oil is also directed through passage (20) that is located in the three center rocker arm supports. The passage in the rocker arm shafts connects the flow of oil to the bushings of the following components: fuel injectors rocker arm, intake rocker arm and exhaust valve rocker arm. Also, drilled passages within all of the rocker arms allow oil to lubricate the following components: rollers, valve bridges and contact surfaces of the unit injectors actuator.

(22) Turbochargers oil supply line
(23) Turbochargers oil return line The engines turbochargers also utilize engine oil for lubrication purposes. The main oil gallery supplies oil to the turbocharger through oil supply line (22). Oil is directed into an oil passage which connects the oil flow to the turbochargers shaft bearings. Oil flows through the outlet port of the turbocharger and oil is returned to the oil pan through return line (23).
