Table 1
J1939 Code and Description Comments
441-15
Auxiliary Temperature #1 : High - least severe The code indicates that the differential temperature of the intake air into the engine has risen above the programmed threshold.
The code is logged. Probable Causes
The probable causes will be low flow rate of SCAC water system related to the following:
Undersized pump
High system head
Pump damage
System fouling
Water/glycol mixtureRecommended Actions
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
C. Check if correct threshold value is programmed in Cat® ET.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Intake Manifold Air Temperature Setpoint In Configuration Is Low
A. Determine correct setting for the engine configuration.
B. If equipped with wax thermostats or customer supplied control
Determine if opening temperature of stats is correct.
Check temperature for the SCAC, determine if it is appropriate based on technical data.
C.Customer supplied thermostatic control.
Setpoint
Result: The engine configuration settings are incorrect.
Repair: Adjust the configuration settings.
Result: The engine configuration settings are correct.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to step 3.
3. IMAT or SCAC sensor in range failures
A. Check each sensor against ambient temperature. Allow engine to cool, remove the SCAC sensor, compare it to Ambient temperature after the sensor has been allowed to cool.
Sensor
Result: One or more temperature sensors are reading incorrectly.
Repair: If IMAT is not reading correctly, replace IMAT sensor. If SCAC is not reading correctly, replace SCAC temp sensor.
Result: The temperature sensor is working properly.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to step 4.
4. Check Radiator Site Tubes
Radiator
Result: The site tubes are low or empty.
Repair: Add coolant and vent the system.
Result: The radiator site tubes are OK.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to step 5.
5. Check system for trapped Air and vent the system accordingly
Refer to SOTA, "Testing the cooling system"
Cooling System
Result: Air trapped in the system.
Repair: Vent system, follow procedure.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to step 6.
6. Check for Insufficient Flow of Air Through the Aftercooler
A. Determine the pressure differential of the inlet air across the aftercooler. For specific data, refer to the TMI for your engine.
Restriction
Result: The pressure differential is NOT OK.
Repair: Clean or replace the aftercooler.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to step 7.
7. Check for Insufficient Flow of Cooling Water Through the Aftercooler
A. Check the outlet temperature of the coolant for the aftercooler.
B. Compare the reading to the inlet temperature of the coolant for the aftercooler.
Note: A high temperature differential indicates an insufficient flow rate.
Restriction
Result: The differential temperature is OK.
Repair: Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result: The differential temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: The coolant flow is restricted. Clean or replace the aftercooler.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 8.
8. Check the Heat Exchanger for Problems
A. Check the cooling fins on the heat exchanger for dirt and/or for debris.
B. Check for sufficient flow and temperature of the cooling water through the heat exchanger.
C. Ensure that the size of the heat exchanger is sufficient.
Heat Exchanger Result: The heat exchanger is OK.
Result: A problem with the heat exchanger has been discovered.
Repair: If the temperature of the cooling water is too high, determine the cause. Clean the components or replace the heat exchanger.
