Information:

start by:a) remove fuel transfer pump adapter housing.b) remove electric starting motor.1. Drain the coolant from the engine. 2. Install tool (A) in the flywheel housing. Turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at top center on the compression stroke. See, Finding Top Center Compression for No. 1 Piston in TESTING AND ADJUSTING SECTION.3. Disconnect six fuel lines (2) from the fuel injection pumps.
Put caps on all of the fuel injection pumps and plugs in all of the fuel lines. This will prevent damage to the fuel system.
4. Remove water tube (1) from the engine.5. Remove covers (3) and (4) from the fuel pump and governor drive housing. 6. Bend the locks back and loosen bolts (6). The camshaft in the fuel injection pump housing can now be turned. Remove bolts (5).7. Remove shims (7) from between the camshaft flange and the coupling. 8. Fasten a hoist to the fuel injection pump housing. Remove the nuts that hold the fuel injection pump housing to the fuel injection pump and governor drive housing. As the fuel injection pump housing is removed, it must be lifted in order to disconnect the lever on the governor from the rack assembly. Weight of the fuel injection pump housing (8) is 80 lb. (36.3 kg).Install Fuel Injection Pump Housing
1. Fasten a hoist to the fuel injection pump housing. Put the fuel injection pump housing (1) in position on the fuel injection pump and governor drive housing.
Make sure the lever on the governor engages in the rack assembly. This can be checked through the opening in the fuel injection pump and governor drive housing.
2. Install the nuts that hold the fuel injection pump housing in position.3. Remove dowel (2) from the hole.4. Turn the camshaft until dowel (2) can be installed in the groove of the camshaft as shown. 5. Turn the coupling until bolts (3) are toward the opening in the fuel injection pump and governor drive housing.6. Put shims (4) between the flange of the camshaft and the coupling. Install one lock and two bolts to hold the shims in position.7. Remove dowel (2) and put it into its original hole.8. Turn the camshaft and install the other lock and two bolts in the flange of the camshaft. 9. Use tool (B) to check the gear clearance (backlash) between the gear and pinion. The gear clearance (backlash) dimension must be .002 to .005 in. (0.05 to 0.13 mm). Start with a shim pack that has a thickness of .046 in. (1.17 mm). Add or remove shims for the correct gear clearance (backlash) adjustment.10. Install the two covers over the openings in the fuel injection pump and governor drive housing.11. Install the water line from the aftercooler to the cylinder block.12. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel injection pumps. Tighten the fuel lines to a torque of 30 5 lb. ft. (40.7 6.8 N m).13. Check the timing for the camshaft of the fuel injection pump. See, Timing Camshaft For The Fuel Injection Pump in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.14. Remove tool (A).15. Fill the engine with coolant to the correct level. See, LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE.end by:a) install fuel transfer pump adapter housingb) install electric starting motorDisassemble Fuel Injection Pump Housing
start by:a) remove fuel injection pump housing 1. Remove bolts (1). Remove cover (2) from the housing assembly.2. Remove bolts (3) and two nuts (5). Remove cover (4) from the housing assembly.3. Put identification on the pump assemblies to prevent mixing at assembly. 4. Remove bolts (6) and clamps (7) that hold the pump assembly in position.5. Remove pump assembly (8). 6. Remove seals (9) and (10) from the pump assembly. 7. Remove pump plunger (11) from the housing assembly. Put identification on the pump plungers to prevent mixing at assembly. 8. Remove the other five pump assemblies and pump plungers from the housing assembly. 9. Remove clip (12) from the rack assembly. Remove rack assembly (13) from the housing assembly. 10. Loosen nuts (15) on the five screws. Put identification on the five screws to prevent mixing at assembly. Remove five screws (14) from the lifters. 11. Turn the camshaft until lifter (16) is all of the way up. Install tool (A) as shown to hold the lifter in this position.12. Follow the same procedure in Step 11 to hold the other five lifters in an up position.13. Put identification on the lifters before they are removed from the housing assembly. This will prevent mixing at assembly. 14. Remove lock (19), nut (17) and washer (18) from the end of the camshaft. 15. Remove camshaft (20) from the housing assembly.
Lifters are under spring tension.
16. Remove tool (A) from the lifters. Remove the lifters and springs from the housing assembly. 17. Remove two bearings (21) from the housing assembly with tool (B).18. Remove the three bolts and locks that hold pilot assembly (22) in position. Remove the pilot assembly.19. Remove camshaft bearings (23) from the housing assembly with tooling (C).Assemble Fuel Injection Pump Housing
1. Install the bearings for the camshaft in the housing assembly with tooling (A).
Make sure the oil holes in the bearings are in alignment with the oil holes in the housing assembly.
2. Put pilot assembly (1) in position in the housing assembly. Install the three locks and bolts that hold it. 3. Install two bearings (2) in the housing assembly. Install the bearings even with the outside surface of the housing assembly. Install the two bearings with tool (C). 4. Install lifter (3) and the spring in the housing assembly. Install tool (B) as shown and tighten the bolt in tool (B) to hold the lifter in an up position. Install the other lifters the same way. 5. Install camshaft (4) in the housing assembly. Remove tool (B) from all of the lifters. 6. Install washer (7), lock (6) and nut (5) on the end of the camshaft. Tighten the nut to a torque of 35 to 45 lb. ft. (47.5 to 61.0 N m).
