Information:
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping Freon-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. Inhaling Freon-12 through any smoking material, although not toxic or flammable, can generate phosgene gas and cause violent illness. Also, heat must never be applied to a charged system. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR7454, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
1. Purge the system. See Air Conditioning And Heating, Purging the System, Form No. SENR7454. 2. Put plugs in the openings in the compressor and refrigerant lines. Put identification marks on refrigerant lines (2) and (3) as to their location on the compressor. To minimize Freon loss, disconnect hose (2) at the radiator and hose (3) at the rear of the cab.3. Remove the bolt and plate (6) to disconnect refrigerant lines (2) and (3) from the compressor.4. Loosen bolt (7) at each end of the mounting bracket.5. Loosen three bolts (10), (11) and nut (8).6. Loosen adjusting nut (12) on the rod, and move the compressor toward the engine so the drive belt can be removed. Remove the drive belt.7. Disconnect two wires (4) from the compressor, and remove the bolt that holds clip (1) and the wiring harness to the compressor.8. Remove three bolts (5) from each end of the compressor. Remove compressor (9) from the engine. The following steps are for the installation of the air conditioner compressor.9. Put compressor (9) in position on the engine, and install three bolts (5) on each end of the compressor that hold it in place.10. Put the wiring harness and clip (1) in position on the compressor, and install the bolt that holds them in place. Connect two wires (4) to the compressor.11. Put the drive belt in position on the pulley.12. Use tool (A) to measure the belt tension. Adjust the belt tension until the gauge reading for a new belt is 534 22 N (120 5 lb.). Adjust the belt tension until the gauge reading for a used belt is 400 44 N (90 10 lb.). A used belt is one which has more than 30 minutes of operation at rated engine speed. when the belt tension is correct, tighten bolts (10), (11) and nut (8). Also tighten bolt (7) at each end of the mounting bracket.13. Put refrigerant lines (2) and (3) in their correct location on the compressor, and install plate (6) and the bolt that holds them in place. If they were disconnected, connect hose (2) at the radiator and hose (3) at the rear of the cab.14. After installation of the air conditioning compressor, perform the following steps: see Air Conditioning And Heating, Form No. SENR7454.a. Do a complete check of compressor oil.b. Do evacuating the system.c. Do a complete charge of the system.d. Do a performance check.
