Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
E265(3) User Defined Shutdown The inputs from the ground level shutdown switch to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) have changed states. The engine will shut down. The code is logged.
267-3 Remote Shutdown Input voltage above normal Both of the switch contacts of the ground level shutdown switch are in the open state. If both of the switch contacts from the ground level shutdown switch change to the same state and the engine is running, the engine will continue to run. The code is logged.
267-4 Remote Shutdown Input voltage below normal Both of the switch contacts of the ground level shutdown switch are in the closed state. The ground level shutdown switch provides the ability to shut down the engine. The engine's ECM remains active. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be used to communicate with the ECM. The ground level shutdown switch must be returned to the RUN position and the engine rpm must be zero before the ECM will allow the engine to start. To shut down the engine, lift the red cover guard and toggle the ground level shutdown switch to the SHUTDOWN position. The ECM reads the position of the ground level shutdown switch. If the engine is running, the ECM disables the fuel injection. The status screen will display "INJECTION DISABLED" and "REMOTE SHUTDOWN".The ECM will not allow the engine to start if the status for the ground level shutdown switch is "REMOTE SHUTDOWN".

P1 ECM connector
(P1-54) user defined shutdown (NO)
(P1-56) user defined shutdown (NC) Test Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connector J1/P1. Thoroughly inspect the connectors for the ground level shutdown switch. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points. Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Status of the Ground Level Shutdown Switch on Cat ET
Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector. Start Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Observe the status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET.
Operate the ground level shutdown switch. Observe the status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET. Expected Result:The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is REMOTE SHUTDOWN when the ground level shutdown switch is in the SHUTDOWN position. Results:
OK - The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is correct.Repair: The ground level shutdown switch is operating normally. There may be an intermittent problem. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is incorrect. The ground level shutdown switch is not operating normally. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Create a Short at the Connector for the Ground Level Shutdown Switch
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the connector for the ground level shutdown switch.
Create a short circuit at the connector for the ground level shutdown switch between terminal A and terminal B.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Observe the status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET.
Create a short circuit at the connector for the ground level shutdown switch between terminal B and terminal C.
Observe the status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove the wire short. Expected Result:The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is REMOTE SHUTDOWN when a short circuit is created at the connector for the ground level shutdown switch between terminal B and terminal C.Results:
OK - The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is correct.Repair: The problem is not with the harness or the ECM. Temporarily connect a new ground level shutdown switch. Verify that the new ground level shutdown switch solves the problem before you permanently install the new ground level shutdown switch.STOP
Not OK - The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is incorrect. There is a problem in the harness and/or the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Create a Short at the ECM
Fabricate jumper wires that can be used to replace the wires in the ECM connector for the ground level shutdown switch. Crimp a connector socket to one end of the jumper wire.
Disconnect the ECM connector J1/P1.
Remove the wires from P1-56 and P1-54.
Install the jumper wires into the terminal locations for the ground level shutdown switch at the ECM connector.
Create a short circuit at the P1 ECM connector between the jumper wire in P1-56 and engine ground.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Observe the status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET.
Create a short circuit at the P1 ECM connector between the jumper wire in P1-54 and engine ground.
Observe the status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Return all wires to the original configuration. Expected Result:The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is REMOTE SHUTDOWN when a short circuit is created between the jumper wire in P1-54 and engine ground. Results:
OK - The status of the ground level shutdown switch on Cat ET is correct.Repair: The problem is in the harness between the ECM connector
