Installed crankshaft timing pin
Put the No. 1 piston at the Top Center Position on the compression stroke. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding the Top Center Position for the No. 1 Piston". Install the crankshaft timing pin.

Left side view (3) Plug for the left camshaft timing hole (4) Left camshaft timing pin in the storage position
Remove plugs (1) and (3) from the camshaft timing holes on both sides of the engine. Remove timing bolts (2) and (4) from the storage positions.
Illustration 4 g00876290
Camshaft timing hole
Install camshaft timing pins (2) and (4) through the holes for plugs (1) and (3) into the camshaft timing holes. For correct timing, both of the camshaft timing pins must fit into the holes in the camshafts when the crankshaft is pinned. If the crankshaft and both camshafts are pinned, the camshafts are correctly timed. If the crankshaft is pinned and either camshaft cannot be pinned, the camshaft position must be adjusted. Proceed to "Camshaft Timing Adjustment".Camshaft Timing Adjustment
Note: Before any timing adjustments are made, the timing must be checked. Checking the timing will determine if an adjustment is required. Refer to "Camshaft Timing Check".Note: If both camshafts must be adjusted, perform this procedure for one camshaft and then perform this procedure for the other camshaft.

Installation of the crankshaft timing pin
Verify the following conditions:
Plugs (1) and (5) are removed from the engine.
Camshaft timing pins (2) and (6) are removed from the engine.
Cover (4) for the crankshaft's timing window is removed.
Crankshaft timing pin (3) is installed in the timing window through the guide sleeve into the crankshaft timing pin bracket.
The No. 1 piston is at the Top Center Position on the compression stroke. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding the Top Center Position for the No. 1 Piston".
If the camshaft is rotated with the timing pin installed, the timing pin will break. This can result in further damage. Make sure to remove the timing pin before the camshaft is rotated.
If the crankshaft is rotated when the timing pin is installed, the timing pin will break. This can result in further damage. Make sure to remove the timing pin before the crankshaft is rotated.
Remove crankshaft timing pin (f3). Operate the prelube pump and turn the crankshaft in the opposite direction of normal rotation for approximately 20 degrees.
Illustration 9 g00876290
Camshaft timing hole
Operate the prelube pump and slowly turn the crankshaft in the direction of normal rotation while both of the camshafts are observed through the ports for plugs (1) and (5). When the first camshaft timing hole is aligned through the port, stop the crankshaft. Install camshaft timing pin (2) or (6) through port (1) or (5) and into the camshaft.
