Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check the Jacket Water Heater
A. If the application has a jacket water heater that is installed, check for proper operation of the circuit.
Jacket Water Heater
Result: The jacket water heater is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair the circuit for the jacket water heater or replace the jacket water heater.
Result: The jacket water heater is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Air Inlet Heater
A. If the application has an air inlet heater that is installed, ensure that the heater is operating correctly. Refer to the particular test procedure for your application.
Air Inlet Heater
Result: The air inlet heater is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the air inlet heater.
Result: The air inlet heater is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Ether Injection System
A. If the application has an ether injection system, ensure that the ether canister is not empty or low. Replace the ether canister if the ether canister is empty or low. If an electrical problem with the ether injection system is suspected, refer to the particular test procedure for your application.
Ether Injection System
Result: The ether injection system is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the ether injection system.
Result: The ether injection system is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check for a Coolant Leak
A. Check for an internal coolant leak into the cylinder and/or the exhaust.
Coolant Leak
Result: There is a coolant leak.
Repair: Replace or repair parts to repair the coolant leak.
Result: There is no coolant leak.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the Engine Speed/Timing Sensors
A. Check the calibration of the engine speed/timing sensor(s). Refer to Troubleshooting, "Timing - Calibrate".
B. Verify that the timing of the crankshaft and camshaft drive gears are set with the proper orientation. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for information that is related to the correct gear installation.
Engine Speed/Timing Sensors
Result: The engine speed/timing sensors are NOT OK.
Repair: Replace the speed/timing sensors.
Result: The engine speed/timing sensors are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the Flash File
A. Verify that the correct flash file is installed in the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM Software - Install".
Flash File

Fuel
Result: The fuel is NOT OK.
Repair: Replace thethe fuel with a higher cetane fuel.
Result: The fuel is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
9. Check for Component Wear
A.Check the valve lash and reset the valve lash, if necessary. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting.
B. Possible causes of low compression are shown in the following list:
• Faulty piston
• Faulty piston rings
• Worn cylinder bores
• Worn valves
• Faulty cylinder head gasket
• Damaged cylinder head
Components
Result: The components are worn.
Repair: Replace any components that are worn.
