Refer to the engine wiring diagram for the configuration of the wiring.Test Step 1. Check for Connector Damage.
Remove the power from the timing control system.
Check the connectors and wiring for the following problems: damage, corrosion, abrasion and incorrect attachment. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".Expected Result:The connectors and wiring are in good condition.Results:
OK - The components are in good condition. Proceed to test step 2.
Not OK - The components require service.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Reconnect all of the connectors. Stop.Test Step 2. Check the Accelerometer.
Check that the accelerometer is mounted properly into the engine block.
Check the wire between the accelerometer and the buffer module. Check that the wire is free of corrosion and damage.Expected Result:The accelerometer is mounted properly. The wiring is free from corrosion or mechanical damage.Results:
OK - The accelerometer is OK. Proceed to test step 3.
Not OK - The accelerometer is not mounted correctly or there is a problem in the wiring.Repair: If the wire is damaged, replace the detonation sensor. Mount the accelerometer into the engine block. Use 10 N m (7.4 lb ft) of torque to secure the accelerometer. Stop.Test Step 3. Check for Shorts in the Wiring.
Disconnect the TCM.
Disconnect the detonation sensors from the engine harness.
Use the 4000 ohm scale on the multimeter to measure the resistance at the engine harness.
Measure the resistance at the Timing Control Harness Connector (TCHC) for the right detonation sensor from pin E to all of the other pins.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the right detonation sensor from pin E to the connector housing.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the right detonation sensor from pin J to all of the other pins.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the right detonation sensor from pin J to the connector housing.
Measure the resistance for the right detonation sensor between all of the pins at the right detonation sensor.
Measure the resistance for the right detonation sensor between the pins and the connector housing at the right detonation sensor.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the left detonation sensor from pin E to all of the other pins.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the left detonation sensor from pin E to the connector housing.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the left detonation sensor from pin K to all of the other pins.
Measure the resistance at the TCHC for the left detonation sensor from pin K to the connector housing.
Measure the resistance for the left detonation sensor between all of the pins at the left detonation sensor.
Measure the resistance for the left detonation sensor between the pins and the connector housing at the left detonation sensor.Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 2000 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is correct. Proceed to test step 4.
Not OK - There is a problem with the wiring or the connectors.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Stop.Test Step 4. Check for an Open Circuit.
Use the 400 ohm scale on the multimeter to measure the resistance between the points that are listed in Table 1:

OK - The resistance is correct. Proceed to test step 5.
Not OK - There is a problem with the connectors or the wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Reconnect all of the connectors. Stop.Test Step 5. Check the Sensor Supply.
Connect the TCM to the engine harness.
Disconnect the detonation sensors from the engine harness.
Apply power to the TCM.
Check that the green "Control ON" LED is illuminated.
Use the 40 VDC scale on the multimeter to measure the voltage at the harness connector for the left detonation sensor between pin A and pin B.
Measure the voltage at the harness connector for the right detonation sensor between pin A and pin B.
Use the scale of 4000 mA DC on the multimeter to measure the current capacity of the supply at the left detonation sensor. Connect pin B to the "COM" terminal of the multimeter and measure the current to pin A.
Measure the current capacity of the supply at the right detonation sensor. Connect pin B to the "COM" terminal of
