Install lower main bearing shell (5) to lower main bearing cap (3). Note: The lower bearing is a plain bearing that has oil holes.
Install upper main bearing shell (4) to upper main bearing cap (2). Note: The upper bearing has a groove.
Lubricate upper main bearing (4) and lower main bearing (5) with clean engine oil.
Position the upper half of main bearing cap (2) in position on the crankshaft. Position the lower half of main bearing cap (3) in position on the crankshaft. Ensure the correct location and orientation of the bearing caps. The locating tabs for the upper and the lower bearings should be on the same side of the engine. Ensure that the dowels are in the correct position. Correctly positioning the bowels will ensure that the two halves of the main bearing caps are aligned.
Install bolts (1) and upper main bearing cap (2) to lower main bearing cap (6).
Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 52 N m (38 lb ft).
Rotate the main bearing cap assembly in order to ensure that there is no binding.
Repeat Step 3 through Step 8 in order to install the remaining main bearing.
