Information:

Avoid splicing or soldering wire connections. All wire connections mentioned and illustrated in this guide should be terminated at terminal strips. This practice will ensure engine and system reliability.Service Tools And Publications Required
The engine installation requires the use of an Electronic Service Tool. The Electronic Service Tool must be equipped with the proper software for each and the applicable user manuals. Referring to, and use of the Troubleshooting and Schematic (from Service Manual) is recommended to aid OEM customer installation of electronic components and systems. Installing OEM Components, Sensors and Connections
Power Supply Connections to Start (Ignition) Switch(es) and Starting Motor
Recommended Wire from Battery to Starting Motor
The wire size (AWG) to -Battery Bus Bar to which components are grounded MUST be of adequate size to handle maximum current for the circuit.
All negative battery connections MUST have a common ground that terminates at the -Battery Bus Bar. Refer to Battery Circuit Requirements And Considerations in this guide for additional information.
Proper grounding for vessel and engine electrical systems is necessary for engine/vessel performance and reliability.
Improper grounding will cause uncontrolled and unreliable circuit paths. This can result in damage to the engine crankshaft main bearings, crankshaft journal surfaces or other engine components. This may also cause electrical activity which may degrade vessel electronics and communication equipment.
The alternator, starting motor, and all electrical systems MUST be grounded to -Battery. The alternator and starting motor must also meet marine isolation requirements. For engines which have an alternator grounded to an engine component, a ground strap MUST connect that component to -Battery and the component MUST be electrically isolated from the engine.Grounding (-Battery Bus Bar Connections)
The problems with intermittent power connections are often very difficult to diagnose and repair.A bus bar with a direct path to -Battery is permissible and recommended to use for all common ground connections. Refer to Battery Circuit Requirements And Considerations in this guide for additional information.3406E Remote Ignition Switch With Engine Mounted Control Panel
Figure 1.22 - 3406E With Control Panel Connections. All wire to be 14 AWG unless otherwise specified.1. Connect from +Battery Bus Bar with appropriate circuit protection, to the Customer Ignition Switch (CIS) positive terminal.2. Connect from the Customer Ignition Switch (CIS) ON terminal (Run), to J3 pin-30 (Remote Run).3. Connect from the Customer Ignition Switch (CIS) S terminal (Start) to J3 pin-29 (Remote Start). A customer provided Shutdown Switch should be installed at each operator station to shut down the engine without removing power to the ECM. Refer to Remote Shutdown Switch in the Installation section.4. Connect -Battery Bus Bar, using 14 AWG wire, to pin-3 of J3 Customer Connector.5. Connect +Battery, using 14 AWG wire, with 5A circuit protection, to J3 Customer Connector pin-1. Refer to Alternator Connections in this manual for Alternator installation information.3406E Remote Ignition Switch Without Engine Mounted Control Panel
Figure 1.23 - 3406E Without Control Panel Connections. All wire to be 14 AWG unless otherwise specified.1. Connect from +Battery Bus Bar with appropriate circuit protection, to the Customer Ignition Switch (CIS) positive terminal.2. Connect from the Customer Ignition Switch (CIS) ON terminal (Run) to the 15 Amp circuit protection. Connect from the 15 Amp breaker to J3 pin-26 (+Battery).3. Connect -Battery Bus Bar, using 14 AWG to J3 pin-3 (-Battery). The ECM -Battery must be connected directly to the -Battery Bus Bar, DO NOT connect to -Battery through any other path.4. Connect +Battery Bus Bar with a 5 Amp circuit protection, to J3 pin-1 (Unswitched +Battery).5. Connect from the Customer Ignition Switch (CIS) S terminal (START) to the Engine Shutdown Switch (ES) pin-2.6. Connect from the Engine Shutdown Switch (ES) pin-3 to J3 pin-36 (Shutdown Input). Connect from the Engine Shutdown Switch (ES) pin-3 to the customer provided Shutdown Switch N/O terminal.7. Connect the customer provided Shutdown Switch common terminal to the -Battery Bus Bar. A customer provided Shutdown Switch should be installed at each operator station to shut down the engine without removing power to the ECM.8. Connect from the Engine Shutdown Switch (ES) pin-4 to the -Battery Bus Bar.Starting Motor Connections
9. Connect from Engine Shutdown Switch (ES) pin-1 to Starting Motor Mag Switch (SMMS) C1 connector pin-2. Connect from Starting Motor Mag Switch (SMMS) C1 connector pin-1 to -Battery Bus Bar.10. Connect from +Battery Bus Bar to the positive terminal on the Starting Motor Mag Switch (SMMS).11. Connect from the Starting Motor Mag Switch (SMMS) directly to the START terminal on the Starting Motor Pinion Solenoid.12. Connect from the +Battery post to the Starting Motor Pinion Solenoid positive terminal using the appropriate diameter (AWG) wire for the distance requirements between connections.13. Connect from the -Battery post to the Starting Motor negative terminal using the appropriate diameter (AWG) wire for the distance requirements between connections.Alternator Connections
14. Connect from +Battery Bus Bar to the Alternator positive terminal using the appropriate diameter (AWG) wire with a properly sized circuit breaker for the battery and alternator charging system requirements.15. Connect from -Battery Bus Bar to the Alternator negative terminal using the appropriate diameter (AWG) wire for the battery and alternator charging system requirements.+Battery Jumper Wire Connections
16. Ensure the jumper connected to J94 is installed. Connect J94 pin-2 to J94 pin-8 using 14 AWG wire for Unswitched +Battery. +Battery Event Recorder requires Unswitched +Battery connection. The ECM will record trip data but the ECM will not retain the data after the ECM is powered down. Current draw from ECM connector J1 pin-4 is less than 10 mA.3176C, 3196 Remote Ignition Switch
Figure 1.24 - 3176C, 3196 Connections. All wire to be 14 AWG unless otherwise specified.1. Connect from +Battery Bus Bar with an appropriate circuit protection, to the Optional Start Switch (OSS) positive terminal.2. Connect from the Optional Start Switch (OSS) ON terminal (RUN) with a 15 Amp circuit protection, to J3 pin-26 (+Battery). The ECM -Battery must be connected directly to the -Battery Bus Bar, DO NOT connect
