Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change" for the correct procedure.
Disconnect the elbows from the heat exchanger. Remove the heat exchanger from the engine.Note: It is not necessary to remove the heat exchanger to disassemble the heat exchanger. The disassembly procedure can be performed on the engine.Note: Put identification marks on all plate assemblies for installation purposes.

Illustration 2 g06408593
Typical Example
Use suitable lifting device to lift the heat exchanger. The weight of the heat exchanger is approximately 92 kg (203 lb). Use suitable cribbing to place the heat exchanger in a flat position on the rear frame. This position can help ensure proper alignment during the procedure.
Remove bolts (2). Install Tooling (A) in spacers (3). Apply Tooling (C) to the threads of the nut and the threads of the guide stud prior to installation. Install the thrust bearing, the hard washer, and the nuts on the guide stud. Ensure that Tooling (A) is securely installed. Place two nuts together and tighten the outer nut to install Tooling (A). Position the thrust bearing, the hard washer, and one nut against the front frame.
Remove bolts (1) from the front frame. Repeat Step 4 to install Tooling (A).Note: It is not necessary to remove the bolts from the rear frame.
Illustration 3 g06408598
Typical Example
Remove bolts (4) and the spacers from the front frame.
Illustration 4 g06408600
Typical Example
Install Tooling (B).
Loosen the nuts on Tooling (A) evenly. Ensure that Tooling (A) does not loosen from the spacers.Note: Do not loosen the nuts more than one turn per nut until the plate assemblies are no longer compressed.Note: As the front frame rises, the plate assemblies will slide along Tooling (B).
Illustration 5 g06408605
Typical Example
Remove Tooling (A) from the spacers.
Use two people to remove front frame (5). The weight of front frame (5) is approximately 29 kg (64 lb). Remove front frame (5). Remove the collars and the liners from front frame (5).Note: Ensure that the collars and the liners are not damaged during removal from the front frame.Note: The liners are removed from the front of the front frame.Note: Note the order and orientation of the plate assemblies and the gaskets during removal.
Remove plate assemblies (6).Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.
