Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect to Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active or logged codes from Table 2 that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes to see if it resolves the issue before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Coolant Level
A. Determine if the engine coolant level is full.
Coolant Level
Result: The coolant level is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The coolant level is NOT OK.
Repair: Add coolant. Determine the cause of low coolant level. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Level Is Low" for additional information.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check for Coolant Leaks
A. Check the entire engine cooling system for signs of coolant leaks.
B. Inspect the coolant supply and return lines to the Pump Electronic Tank Unit (PETU) for leaks or damage that may cause restrictions.
C. Remove the top cover to the PETU assembly to gain access to the coolant lines on the PETU.
D. Inspect the coolant lines and routing inside the PETU assembly for leaks or damage that may cause restriction.
Leaks
Result: No leaks were detected.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: There were leaks or damaged lines detected.
Repair: Repair the leaks or damaged lines and refill the coolant system.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check the Coolant Shutoff Valves and Coolant Screen
A. Confirm that the coolant shutoff valves to the PETU are open.
Note: The shutoff valves are on the side of the regulator housing.
B. Confirm that the coolant screen is installed.
C. Remove the coolant screen and inspect for debris.
Shutoff Valves
Debris
Result: The shutoff valves are open and the coolant screen is clean.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The shutoff valves were closed or the coolant screen was plugged.
Repair: Open the shutoff valves. Clean or replace coolant screen.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Inspect the electrical connections to each of the DEF tank headers. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for additional information.
B. Look for corrosion or loose wires.
Connectors and Wiring
Result: The connectors and wiring appear to be OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the Coolant Temperature Sensor
A. Start the engine.
B. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
C. Connect to Cat ET.
D. Use Cat ET to monitor the following temperature:
- Coolant temperature
Note: The temperature should be greater than 50° C (122° F).
Sensor
Result: The coolant temperature is greater than 50° C (122° F).
