Reference.
Find the top center position for the number one piston. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding Top Center Position for No. 1 Piston".

(1) 456-7990 Timing Pin
Install timing pin (1) into the flywheel.
Remove the camshaft gear cover.
Remove the camshaft speed timing sensor and camshaft timing wheel.
Remove the valve mechanism cover and loosen all of the rocker arm bolts.
Remove the camshaft gear, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft Gear Remove and Install".

Check the orientation of index hole (2) as shown above. If the index hole is in the proper orientation, proceed to Step 9.
If the index hole is not in proper orientation, rotate the camshaft in order to orientate the index hole as shown in Illustrations 2 and 3.

(4) Camshaft gear (5) Bolts
Install the camshaft, tighten bolts (5) to 25 1 N m (18 1 lb ft) and turn the bolts an additional 45 degrees.
Tighten all of the rocker arm bolts to 100 10 N m (75 7 lb ft).

Install a dial indicator on cylinder 3 exhaust rocker arm. Preload the dial indicator a minimum of 7 mm (0.28 inch).
Rotate the engine in a clockwise rotation until the dial indicator gauge reaches the minimum value possible.Note: Ensure that the rocker arm remains in contact with the camshaft during the measurement.
Zero the dial indicator.
Rotate the engine in normal counter clockwise rotation until the dial indicator measures 4.70 0.05 mm (0.19 0.002 inch).

(A) Double notch
Verify double notch (A) is visible from the inspection hole on the upper right-hand side of the flywheel housing and timing pin (1) can be inserted into the flywheel.If the timing pin cannot be installed and/or double notch (A) is not visible, the camshaft timing must be adjusted. Proceed to Step 16.If the camshaft is in time, proceed to Step 21.

(4) Camshaft gear (5) Bolts
Loosen bolts (5) , rotate the engine using the turning tool in order to install the timing pin and align the double notches with the inspection hole on the upper right of the flywheel housing. Refer to Illustrations 1 and 9.
Tighten bolts (5) to 25 1 N m (18 1 lb ft) and turn the bolts an additional 45 degrees.
