Problem
The timing advance race and spool may wear, and cause retaining ring loss on certain 3406B Truck Engines.

Action Required
Pin the injection pump camshaft. Remove the outer cover and the governor drive group from the engine. Remove the 7W1527 Retainer (inside cone) to expose the flyweights and carrier. Install the new parts listed under Parts Needed. Make sure the 7E2460 Race(s) are installed with the flat sides against the retaining ring on the spool. See Illustration 1. During assembly it is helpful to install the first three flyweights and one 9Y7450 Retainer. See Illustration 2. Insert the first race (sleeve down), installing retaining ring securely in spool, and then add the final flyweight, dowel, and retainer. Tighten the four 8C9034 Bolts to 3.4 +/- 0.4 N.m (31 +/- 4 lb in). Finally, slip the second 7E2460 Race on the spool (sleeve up). Be sure the flyweight carrier/body assembly is fully retracted in drive group. Install spring and inside retainer. Pre-set advance START and STOP adjustments. This may be done with the drive group on or off the engine. Loosen the 3K3467 Nut, and turn the 7W7663 Screw counterclockwise (CCW) 1 1/6 turns. Tighten the nut to 70 +/- 15 N.m (50 +/- 11 lb ft). While holding the 5H6552 Setscrew, remove the 4B2049 Nut. Turn the 5H6552 Setscrew clockwise (CW) 1 5/6 turns. Carefully install the 8L5832 Nut without turning the setscrew. Tighten the nut to 4.5 +/- 0.5 N.m (39 +/- 4 lb in). Install a 3/8"-16 NC x 5 1/2" long guide bolt in the fuel pump guide ring. A 5F4899 Bolt with the head removed will work. Install the governor drive group with large bolts. Remove the guide bolt. Install the outer cover with a new 2W0459 Gasket. Remove the pin from the injection pump and replace the plug. Check the dynamic timing of the engine using a 6V3100 or 8T5300 Timing Indicator Group. Stamp "PS4300" on upper right rear corner of cylinder block.
