REPLACE WASHERS AND BOLTS ON FAN DRIVE PILLOW BLOCK, 3500 Series Industrial And Generator Set Engines, 1359, PI7096 U-54 AU-45 B-20 C-49.1 E-33 O-40 SEE JULY 6, 1984 Problem Some 3500 Series Engines with a radiator-mounted fan drive use washers and bolts on the pillow block that can yield and/or break. The washers were not hardened, and grade 5 bolts were used instead of the harder grade 8 bolts. Hardened washers and grade 8 bolts are now used in production. See Illustration 1. ILLUSTRATION 1 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Affected Engines And New Parts Needed Engines within the listed serial number ranges having radiators with radiator-mounted fan drives are candidates for this program. Further inspection of the part number and date code on the radiator identification tag will have to be made, as explained under "Action Requesed." A maximum of 4 bolts may be needed.) Action Requested (Parts Stock Action Not Needed) The part number of the radiator on any listed engine must be determined to see if the rework is necessary. If you are the selling dealer, check your records to see if a listed engine has one of the radiator part numbers shown in the chart below. This information should be on the engine invoice. If you are not the selling dealer, a preliminary conversation with the customer may provide the needed information. The radiator part number and date code are on the identification tag which is attached to one of the side channels (usually on the lower right hand side) on the radiator. The date code consists of one letter followed by two numbers. The letter corresponds to the month of the year (A=January, B=February, C=March, etc.) and the numbers indicate the year (82=1982). If the date code on the tag is D83 (April, 1983) or later, no rework is necessary. If the date code is C83 (March, 1983) or earlier, it will be necessary to inspect the bolts and washers on the pillow block and replace as necessary. If no tag is found on the radiator, rub the washer with a steel file. The file will scratch a washer that is not hardened, but will not leave a mark on a hardened washer. Replace any washers that are not hardened. Also, inspect the bolt heads. Replace any Grade 5 bolt with either an L1169 Bolt or a 1B4367 Bolt. Both these bolts are Grade 8. Tighten to a torque of 200 +/- 25 N X m (150 +/- 25 lb ft). See Illustration 2.
