Event Code
J1939 Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
174-0 Engine Fuel Temperature 1 : High - most severe (3) The fuel temperature of the low-pressure fuel system is above the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
Engine power will be derated. If high fuel temperature shuts down the engine, cycle the power to the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) in order to restart.Probable Causes

Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
174-0
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 174-0 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Check the High-pressure Fuel Pump
A. Use the time stamps that are for the logged events in order to determine when the following events were active:
- 3468-15
- 3468-16
- 170-0
174-0
Result: The 3468 was active at the same time the 170-0 was active.
Proceed to Step 4.
Result: The 3468 was active and the 174-0 was not active.
Proceed to the next step.
3. Perform the Following Procedure
A. Start the engine. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is achieved.
B. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameters:
- Fuel Temperature
- Fuel Rail Temperature
C. Compare the value of each parameter while the engine is at normal operating temperature.
D. Check that temperature difference across the high-pressure fuel pump.
The temperature difference across the high-pressure fuel pump must not exceed 40 °C (72 °F).
Temperature
Result: The temperature difference is OK.
Repair: Proceed to the next step.
Result: the temperature difference across the high-pressure fuel pump exceeds 40 °C (72 °F).
Repair: Replace the high-pressure fuel pump.
Replace the in-line high-pressure fuel filter element in the block assembly that is part of the front fuel injection line.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
4. Inspect the Fuel Pressure Regulating Valve for Debris
Valve
Result: The valve is free of debris or was cleaned and reinstalled. The problem is not resolved.
Repair: If the valve is suspected of improper operation, replace the valve.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
5. Check for a Low Fuel Tank Level
Typically, as the level of the fuel in the tank decreases, the fuel temperature will increase.
Fuel
level
Result: The fuel level is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The fuel level is NOT OK.
Fill the tank. Verify that the problem has been resolved.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
6. Check the Fuel Temperature Sensors
A. Use Cat ET to monitor the values for the following parameters:
- Fuel Temperature
- Fuel Rail Temperature
Parameter
value
Result: A value for a parameter is not within reason.
Proceed to the next step.
7. Check the Sensor Circuit Components
A. Inspect the suspected sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
Components
Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.
Repair: Replace the sensor.
