17685-95J11 Suzuki GASKET, THERMOSTAT COVER

Problem
Pistons may scuff in the liners of certain 3508, 3512, and 3516 Engines due to improper combustion especially during cold starts. The new governor control reduces the fuel used during start-up. The new water temperature regulators and the change to the regulator housing will help maintain cooling system temperatures both during engine operation and while heating with jacket water heaters. The jacket water heaters or ether starting aid systems will provide improved starting with smooth combustion. All of these items will help prevent piston scuffing.
The use of a starting aid (either jacket water heaters or an ether starting aid system is recommended on any 3508, 3512, or 3516 Engine which is operated in air temperatures of 13°C (50°F) or lower.

Group 1
Install low leakage water temperature regulators. See the article on Page 14 of the June 25, 1990 Service Magazine (Page 6 of the July 1990 Engine News).
Group 2
Change 2301 Governor Control to 2301A Governor Control. See Special Instructions SEHS9188 "Installation of 7E5253 Governor Control Assembly."
Fuel Limit/Ramp Time must be set during installation of 2301A Governor Control. "Maximum" fuel setting and "minimum" ramp settings must be set to prevent over fueling at startup. Se the fuel limit initially to minimum and the ramp limit initially to maximum acceptable and then adjust as needed.
Group 3
The hole in the bottom of the top regulator housing that allows coolant from the top housing to drain to the bottom housing when the engine coolant is drained needs to be plugged.
To plug the hole, remove the top regulator housing and tap the 10.5 mm hole (shown in the illustration) to accept a 7F9504 Plug (" standard pipe thread). When installing the 7F9504 Plug in the tapped hole, make sure top of the plug is flush with (or slightly below) the surface of the housing.
