2. Loosen clamp (1). Disconnect hose (2) from the water pump cover. 3. Remove elbow (3).4. Loosen clamps (5) on the hose. Slide hose (6) up on the water pump cover. 5. Remove cover (4) from the water pump. 6. Loosen nuts (7) and (9) for the vee belt adjustment. Remove alternator vee belt (8). Remove air conditioning compressor vee belt (10). 7. Remove bolts (12). Remove crankshaft pulley (11) from the vibration damper. 8. Remove two bolts (13) 180° apart from the vibration damper. Install two 1/2"-13 NC bolts 4" long in their place. Remove the remainder of the bolts from the damper. 9. Remove bolts (15). Remove elbow (14) and tube assembly (16) from the lower elbow (17) as a unit.10. Pull vibration damper (18) toward the front of the engine on the 1/2"-13 NC bolts that were installed in Step 8.11. Remove elbow (17) from behind the vibration damper. 12. Remove four nuts (19) and one bolt that hold the water pump to the timing gear housing. 13. Remove bolts (21). Remove water pump (20).Install Water Pump
1. Check the O-ring seal on the back of the water pump for wear or damage. If necessary, make a replacement. 2. Install a new gasket on the bonnet. Put water pump (1) in position on the timing gear housing. Install the nuts and bolt that hold it.3. Check the O-ring seals on the elbow and tube assembly for wear or damage. If necessary, make a replacement. Put a small amount of SAE 30 oil on the tube assembly O-ring seals.4. Put elbow (3) in position on the timing gear housing behind the vibration damper. 5. Install a new gasket on elbow (2). Install elbow (2) and tube assembly (4) on the cover assembly and elbow (3). 6. Put vibration damper (5) in its correct position on the crankshaft adapter. Install the bolts that hold it. Remove two 1/2"-13 NC bolts (6) that are 4" long. Install the remainder of the vibration damper bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 100 11 lb.ft. (135 15 N m). 7. Install pulley (7) on the vibration damper.8. Install the alternator vee belt (8) and air conditioning compressor vee belt (10). Use one of the following procedures to make an adjustment to the vee belt tension: a) Use a Borroughs Gauge BT-33-72C to check the belt tension. Tighten the nut on the adjustment rod until the indications on the Borroughs gauge are 120 5 for a new belt or 90 10 for a used belt. A used belt is one which has more than 30 minutes of engine use at high idle.b) Tighten the nut on the adjustment rod until the vee belt has a movement (deflection) of .562 to .812 in. (14 to 20 mm) under a 25 lb. (110 N) force half way between the centers of the pulleys. 3. Tighten nuts (9) to a torque of 110 15 lb.ft. (149 20 N m). Tighten the bolts that hold the compressor and alternator. 9. Check O-ring seal (12) for damage or wear. If necessary, make a replacement.10. Put cover (11) in position on the water pump. Install the bolts that hold it.11. Slide hose (14) into position on the radiator elbow. Tighten clamps (13). 12. Install new gaskets on the covers. Install elbow (15). 13. Connect hose (17) to the water pump cover. Tighten clamp (16).14. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level. See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE.Disassemble Water Pump
start by:a) remove water pump 1. Remove O-ring seal (1) from adapter (2).2. Remove adapter (2) with a screwdriver. Remove the seal from the edge of adapter (2).3. Remove bolt (3) and washer. 4. Remove impeller (4) from the water pump housing with tooling (A). 5. Remove seal assembly (5). Remove ring and seal (6). 6. Remove the bolt and washer that hold gear (7) on the water pump shaft.7. Remove gear (7) with tooling (B).8. Remove bolts and retainer (9).9. Remove O-ring seal (8).10. Remove shaft (10) and bearings as a unit. 11. Remove bearing (11), spacer (12) and bearing (13) from shaft (10).12. Remove lip type seal from the gear side of the water pump. Remove ring and seal from the impeller side of the water pump.Assemble Water Pump
1. Put clean engine oil or glycerine on the lip of seal (1). Install seal (1) as shown with tooling (A). 2. Install bearing (4), spacer (3) and bearing (5) on shaft (2). Install shaft (2) in the pump housing. 3. Install retainer (7) and O-ring seal (8).4. Install gear (6). Install washer and bolt that hold gear (6) to shaft (2).
Clean water only is permitted for use as a lubricant for assistance at installation. Do not damage or put hands on the wear surface of the carbon ring or the ceramic ring. Install the ceramic ring with the smoothest face of the ring toward the carbon seal assembly.
5. Put ceramic ring (10) in position in the rubber seal (9). Use hand pressure and tool (11) (which is with the replacement ring) to install the ceramic ring in the housing. 6. Remove the spring from seal assembly (12). Use hand pressure and tool (11) (which is with the replacement ring) to install the seal assembly. Push seal assembly on the shaft until the seal faces make light contact. 7. Install spring (13) on the seal assembly and impeller (14) on the shaft. Install the bolt and washer on the shaft. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 29 2 lb.ft. (40 3 N m). 8. Install O-ring seals (15) on adapter (16). Put clean SAE 30 oil on O-ring seals.9. Install adapter (16) in the pump housing. Make sure the notch in the adapter is in alignment with dowel (17). end by:a) install water pump
