Schematic for the emergency stop switches
Test Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the battery isolator switch to the OFF position.
Illustration 2 g01186024
Location of the J1/P1 ECM connectors (typical left side engine view)
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector. Inspect all of the connectors that are associated with the circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.

Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connectors and the connector for the EMCP that are associated with the circuit.
Check the torque of the allen head screws for each of the ECM connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the batteries to the ECM. Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted, and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring are not OK.Repair: Repair the wiring and/or the connectors. Replace parts, if necessary.STOPTest Step 2. Test the ECM Circuit
Create a jumper wire that is long enough to reach from the battery negative post to any termination in the circuit for J1-23. securely attach the jumper to the battery negative post.
Remove wire361-OR(Orange) and wire 200-BK(Black) from the E-C6 connector for the generator.
Reconnect the E-C6 connector for the generator, if the connector was removed for the previous operation.
Use the jumper wire in order to short wire 361-OR(Orange) of the connector for the generator to the battery negative.
Turn the battery isolator switch to the ON position.
Observe Cat ET in order to see the result. Results:
The E-264(3) code went away. The wire and the ECM are working properly. - Proceed to test step 4.
The E-264(3) code did not go away. The circuit or the ECM is faulty. - Proceed to test step 3.Test Step 3. Check the ECM for Proper Operation
Remove the wire 361-OR(Orange) for the P1 connector at terminal P1-23 and replace the wire with the jumper wire for the battery negative. Use the proper termination.
Observe Cat ET in order to see the result. Results:
The E-264(3) code went away. The ECM is working properly. - Repair: Repair the wire 361-OR(Orange) or termination that is responsible for the open circuit.STOP
The E-264(3) code did not go away. The ECM is faulty. - Repair: Replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM - Replace".STOPTest Step 4. Determine the Location of the Open Circuit.
Short wire 361-OR(Orange) and wire 200-BK(Black) of the E-C6 connector for the generator. Use a jumper wire and appropriate terminals.
Observe Cat ET in order to see the result. Results:
The E-264(3) code went away. - Proceed to test step 5.
The E-264(3) code did not go away. There is a problem with the ground path between the generator connector and the battery negative post. - Repair: Repair the condition for the open circuit. Restore all wiring to the original configuration.STOPTest Step 5. Test the Circuit for the Emergency Stop Switch
Short the terminals at the normally closed emergency stop switch.
Observe Cat ET in order to see the result. Results:
The code went away. - Repair: Replace the emergency stop switch.Restore all wiring to the original configuration.STOP
The code did not go away. There is a problem with the ground path between the generator connector and the emergency stop switch. - Repair: Repair the condition for the open circuit. Restore all wiring to the original configuration.STOP
