Diagnostic Codes
Use one of the following methods to check for active diagnostic codes:
The electronic service tool
The display on the control panel
Flash CodesElectronic Service Tool
Connect the electronic service tool to the diagnostic connector.
Check for active diagnostic codes on the electronic service tool.
Investigate any active codes before continuing with this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Troubleshooting with a Diagnostic Code". Display on the Control PanelNote: The following procedure is only applicable if the application is equipped with a display on the control panel.
Check the display on the control panel for active diagnostic codes.
Troubleshoot any active codes before continuing with this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Troubleshooting with a Diagnostic Code". Flash CodesNote: The following procedure is only applicable if the machine is equipped with the appropriate warning lamps.
Check the warning lamps on the control panel for flash codes. Flash codes are explained in Troubleshooting, "Flash Codes".
If any flash codes are displayed, troubleshoot the codes before continuing with this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Troubleshooting with a Diagnostic Code". Air Intake
Check the air filter for blockage or restriction.
Check the air intake duct for blockages or restrictions. Electrical Connectors
Check for correct installation of connectors at the following locations:
P1 ECM connector
P2 ECM connector
Connector for the solenoid on the fuel injection pump
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
Inspect the battery cables from the ECM to the battery compartment. Refer to the Schematic Diagram. Inspect the cables and the power relay. Check the power and ground connections to the ECM. Refer to the schematic diagram for more information.
Select the "Wiggle Test" from the diagnostic tests on the electronic service tool.
Choose the appropriate group of parameters to monitor.
Press the "Start" button. Wiggle the wiring harness in order to reproduce intermittent faults. Note: If an intermittent fault exists, the status will be highlighted and an audible beep will be heard.
Repair any faults and ensure that the symptom has been cleared. If the symptom is still present, refer to "Fuel Supply". Fuel Supply
Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.
Visually check the fuel tank for fuel. The fuel gauge may be faulty.
Ensure that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is in the full OPEN position.
If the temperature is below 0 °C (32 °F), check for solidified fuel (wax).
Check the primary filter/water separator for water in the fuel.
Check for fuel supply lines that are restricted.
Check that the Electric Fuel Lift Pump (EFLP) is operating. If the EFLP is suspect, refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Pump Relay Circuit - Test".
Check that the low-pressure fuel lines are tight and secured properly.
Check the fuel filters.
Check the diesel fuel for contamination. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing, and Adjusting, "Fuel Quality - Test".
Check for air in the fuel system. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing, and Adjusting, "Air in Fuel - Test".
Ensure that the fuel system has been primed. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing, and Adjusting, "Fuel System - Prime".
Check the fuel pressure. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing, and Adjusting, "Fuel System Pressure - Test".
If the fault has not been eliminated, contact the technical communicator at a Caterpillar dealer.
