Information:
Start By: a. tilt radiator forwardb. remove vibration damper and crankshaft pulley
The crankshaft seal and wear sleeve come as a set and must not be separated from each other at any time. Carefully read Special Instruction, Form No. SMHS8508, that is included with each seal and wear sleeve before any handling of the seal group is made.
1. Remove bolts (2). Remove adapter (1) from the end of the crankshaft. 2. Use a sharp punch and a hammer to put four equally spaced holes in seal (3).3. Install the tip of tool (A) into the seal, and use the slide hammer to pull it out of the timing gear housing. Change the location of tool (A) in the seal in order to pull the seal out evenly. 4. Install 5P7314 Distorter Ring (5) [part of tooling (B)] in the space where the seal was removed.
Be careful not to damage the crankshaft surface.
5. Use 5P7312 Distorter (4) [part of tooling (B)] to distort the wear sleeve. Put the end of the distorter in the space where the seal was removed.6. Turn the distorter to cause distortion to the wear sleeve. Move the distorter to another position, and turn the distorter again. Do this procedure until the wear sleeve is loose on the crankshaft.7. Remove the distorter, distorter ring and wear sleeve. The following steps are for the installation of the front seal and wear sleeve.
The crankshaft seal and wear sleeve come as a set and must not be separated from each other at any time. Carefully read Special Instruction, Form No. SMHS8508, that is included with each seal and wear sleeve before any handling of the seal group is made.
8. Make sure the seal bore and the crankshaft surfaces are clean and free of nicks and burrs. 9. Fasten tooling (C) to the crankshaft.10. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.11. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.
Make sure the seal is installed with the part number and the arrows showing crankshaft rotation toward the outside.
The front and rear seals and wear sleeves have different spiral grooves in the seal. Because of this type of design, the front seal group for an engine is different from the rear seal group. If a seal group is installed on the wrong end of the engine, oil can actually be taken out of the engine instead of moving the oil back into the engine.
12. Put seal group (3) in position on tooling (C). 13. Put clean engine oil on the face of washer on nut (8) [part of tooling (D)] that contacts the installer.14. Install tooling (D) onto tooling (C), and install nut (8) [part of tooling (D)] on the threaded shaft of tooling (C).15. Tighten nut (8) until tooling (D) contacts tooling (C).16. Remove tooling (D) and (C), and check the wear sleeve and lip-type seal for the correct installation dimension. The wear sleeve must be flush with the front face of the crankshaft within 0.13 mm ( .005 in.). The distance from the front edge of the crankshaft to the metal face of the seal must be 4.90 0.60 mm (.193 .024 in.).End By:a. install vibration damper and crankshaft pulleyb. tilt radiator backward
