Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Code
J1939 Code Code Description Comments
3242-15 Particulate Trap Intake Gas Temperature : High - least severe (1) There are no active 168 diagnostic codes.
The Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD) has been running for at least 30 seconds. The temperature at the intake of the DPF rises above a temperature that is calculated by the ECM. The temperature threshold has been exceeded for 60 seconds.
The code is logged. The code remains active until electrical power to the ECM is cycled.
3242-16 Particulate Trap Intake Gas Temperature : High - moderate severity (2) There are no active 168 diagnostic codes.
The Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD) has been running for at least 30 seconds. The temperature at the intake of the DPF rises above 690° C (1274° F) and the temperature then remains above
680° C (1256° F) for 60 seconds. These values are configurable.
Active regeneration is immediately disabled. Engine power is derated. The code is logged. The code remains active until electrical power to the ECM is cycled.
Follow the troubleshooting procedure in order to identify the root cause of the fault. Troubleshooting Procedure
Related Systems
Download the following items before performing any troubleshooting or clearing any diagnostic codes:
Warranty Report
Aftertreatment Regeneration Trigger History
Product Status Report with HistogramsTroubleshoot any faults that relate to the following systems or conditions:
Low output pressure from the turbochargers
Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD)
NOx Reduction System (NRS)Troubleshoot the systems in the order that is listed above if there are faults in more than one of the systems. If no faults are apparent, refer to "DPF".DPF
Remove the inlet section from the DPF. Inspect the inside of the inlet section and the front face of the DPF for excessive ash.A small amount of ash is a normal condition. If the amount of ash is considered to be excessive, contact the Caterpillar technical communicator. Continue with this procedure after guidance has been received.
Inspect the inside of the inlet section and the front face of the DPF for oil.If oil is found, inspect the outlet of the turbochargers. If oil is found, contact the technical communicator at a Caterpillar dealer. Continue with this procedure after guidance has been received.
Clean the oil from the inside of the inlet section of the DPF and the front face of the DPF. Assemble the DPF. Run the engine at 1400 rpm for 15 minutes.Electronic Unit Injectors
If no oil is found in the previous test step, leave the inlet section disconnected from the DPF. Use the electronic service tool to disable the ARD. Set the value of the "Data Link ARD Disable Status" configuration parameter to "Disabled" in order to disable the ARD.
Perform a manual cylinder cutout test. Manually cut out each cylinder while the exhaust is monitored for excessive smoke. Check whether the smoke disappears as each cylinder is cut out. Replace any injectors that cause the engine to smoke and run rough when the cylinder is not cut out.
Clean the inside of the inlet section of the DPF and the front face of the DPF.
Assemble the DPF.
Set the value of the "Data Link ARD Disable Status" configuration parameter to "Not Disabled" in order to enable the ARD. Then, proceed to the next test step.
Run the engine at 1400 rpm for 15 minutes.
Use the electronic service tool to perform a DPF regeneration. If the fault is still present, contact the technical communicator at a Caterpillar dealer.
