Disconnect batteries before performance of any service work.
Start By:a. remove exhaust elbowb. remove the crankshaft rear seal and wear sleevec. remove service meter Use a 9S9082 Engine Turning Tool to turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation and install timing pins in the camshafts before the flywheel is removed.1. Remove the starter from the flywheel housing.2. Remove the covers and gaskets from the flywheel housing. 3. Remove the bolts and the plates from the camshafts. Use tooling (A) to remove camshaft drive gears (1). 4. Drain the oil from the oil pan. 5. Remove all of the bolts that hold the oil pan to the engine. Install 3/8 two " - 16NC guide bolts (3) in each side of the oil pan. Fasten a hoist to the engine and lift the engine approximately 12 mm (0.5 in) off the oil pan. Put 1/4 two 50 mm wide x 100 mm long x 6 mm thick (2 in. wide x 4 in. long x in. thick) plates in position between the cylinder block and the oil pan on each side of the engine. Lower the engine on the plates and remove the hoist from the engine. The weight of the engine is 7718 kg (17,000 lb).6. Use tooling (B) to fasten a hoist to the flywheel housing. Remove the bolts and remove flywheel housing (2) from the engine. The weight of the flywheel housing is 251 kg (552 lb). 7. Remove the gasket and O-ring seal (4) from the engine block. The following steps are for installation of the flywheel housing.8. Install O-ring seal (4) on the block and put clean engine oil on it.9. Put the flywheel housing gasket in position on the rear of the cylinder block. 10. Install 5/8 two " - NC guide bolts in the rear of the cylinder block. Using tooling (B) to fasten a hoist to the flywheel housing. Put the flywheel housing in position on the guide bolts. Install the bolts to hold the flywheel housing in position. Remove the guide bolts and install the remainder of the bolts.11. Tighten flywheel housing 1/2"-NC bolts to a torque of 100 14 N m (74 10 lb ft). The 5/8"-11 NC bolts are tightened to a torque of 200 25 N m (148 18 lb ft). Cut the flywheel housing gasket even with the bottom of the cylinder block.12. Tighten three plugs (1) in each housing to a torque of 70 15 N m (52 11 lb ft).13. Fasten a hoist to the engine and lift the engine enough to remove the plates between the cylinder block and the oil pan. If the oil pan gasket is damaged, the engine will have to be removed from the oil pan to make a replacement of the gasket. Lower the engine on the oil pan and remove the guide bolts from the oil pan. Install all of the bolts that hold the oil pan to the engine.14. Install camshaft drive gears (1), the plates and the bolts. See the topic, Install Camshaft for proper tightening procedures. 15. Adjust magnetic pick-ups (5) located in the top of the flywheel housing. Clearance between the magnetic pick-up and the flywheel ring gear is 0.55 to 0.83 mm (.022 to .033 in). With the engine stopped, turn in the pick-up until it comes in contact with the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. Turn the pick-up back out 1/21/10 turn. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 45 7N m (35 5 lb ft). Install the flywheel housing covers and gaskets.16. Install the starter and reconnect the batteries.17. Fill engine with oil to the correct level.
