Information:
Selection of Oil Change Interval
Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fluid Recommendations" for further information about oils that may be used in Caterpillar engines.Use the chart below to determine the oil drain for your engine, based on the oil type, oil filter, and oil sampling. Oil drains of up to 1000 hours require the use of : Caterpillar branded oil (CK-4), Caterpillar oil filters, an oil pan capable of extended oil drains, and Caterpillar S O S Services oil analysis. If oil, filter, pan, or Caterpillar S O S services are not available, then must use the standard 500-hour oil drain interval. Some severe duty machines may not be able to extend oil drains, due to the listed severe duty factors. Use S O S Services oil analysis to determine the optimum oil change when operating in severe conditions. If S O S Services oil analysis is not being used, the oil change interval should be reduced to 250 hrs.Severe Duty Factors

After the engine has been run at the normal operating temperature, stop the engine. Attach a "DO NOT OPERATE" or a similar warning tag to the ignition keyswitch before the engine is serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Remove the oil drain plug to allow the oil to drain.
After the oil has drained, the oil drain plug should be cleaned and installed.Replace the Oil Filter
Caterpillar oil filters are built to Caterpillar specifications. Use of an oil filter not recommended by Caterpillar could result in severe engine damage to the engine bearings, crankshaft, etc., as a result of the larger waste particles from unfiltered oil entering the engine lubricating system. Only use oil filters recommended by Caterpillar.
