Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Start By:
Drain the engine oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct procedure.
Remove the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove" for the correct procedure.Note: On the cast iron oil pan, ensure that both lower drain plugs are removed when draining the engine oil in service to make sure that oil is drained from either side of the tunnel.

Remove oil drain plugs (3) from engine oil pan (1).
Remove O-ring seals (2) from oil drain plugs (3).
Place the engine in a suitable stand, invert the engine ready to remove the engine oil pan.

Remove bolts (7), bolts (9), and bolts (8) from engine oil pan (1).
Using a suitable lifting tool, remove the engine oil pan from the engine cylinder block.Note: The engine oil pan weighs 90 kg (198 lb).
Remove seal (4) from the engine oil pan (1).
Remove dipstick (6) and oil filler cap (7) from engine oil pan (1).

If necessary, follow Step 3a through Step 3e to remove the oil strainers.
Place engine oil pan (1) on a suitable stand.
Position balance weights (10) to allow access to bolt (13), remove the bolt.
Remove strainer tube assembly (12) from engine oil pan (1). Remove O-ring seal (11) (not shown) from the strainer tube assembly.
Position balance weights (14) to allow access to bolt (17), remove the bolt.
Remove strainer (16) from engine oil pan (1). Remove O-ring seal (15) (not shown) from the strainer tube assembly.Installation Procedure

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Ensure that all components are clean and free from damage including the gasket surfaces of the engine cylinder block and the engine oil pan. If necessary, replace any components that are worn or damaged.
Measure end float and backlash of engine oil pan gear train. Refer to Specifications, "Gear Group Rear - Engines with a Balancer" for the correct procedure.

If necessary, follow Step 3a through Step 3i to install oil strainer assemblies.
Place engine oil pan (1) on a suitable stand.
Install new O-ring seal (11) (not shown) onto strainer tube assembly (12).
Install strainer tube assembly (12) into engine oil pan (1) in Position (V).
Position balance weights (10) to allow access to install bolt (13). Install the bolt finger tight.
Tighten bolt (13) to a torque of 22 N m (195 lb in).
Install new O-ring seal (15) (not shown) onto strainer tube assembly (16).
Install strainer tube assembly (16) into engine oil pan (1) in Position (W).
Position balance weights (14) to allow access to install bolt (17). Install the bolt finger tight.
Tighten bolt (17) to a torque of 22 N m (195 lb in).
Position the engine at top center position for No.1 piston. Refer to Systems Operating Testing and Adjusting, "Finding Top Center Position for No.1 Piston" for the correct procedure.

Remove plug (18). Using Tooling (C) in Position (D) lock the balancer shafts in the installation position.Note: Ensure that the locking pin locates in the recess in the balancer shaft.
Remove O-ring seal (19) (not shown) from plug (18).

Sealant bead in Position (X) and Position (Y) should end 2 mm (0.079 inch) from both the component edges
