Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this Special Instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures should be observed.Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person must also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance of a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Avoid using a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar.Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures.
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.
High voltage may be present. The power source must be disconnected before working on equipment. Failure to disconnect the power source could result in injury or death.
Working with electrical circuits is hazardous and exposes personnel to electrical potential. To ensure safe operation, personnel must be trained in proper operating procedures. Bodily contact with electrical potential can cause serious personal injury or death.
Control System Overview
The G3600 A4 control system consists of the A4 Electronic Control Module (ECM). A4 ECM is connected to an array of sensors and control devices used by the ECM to monitor, control, and protect the engine. A "local" Controller Area Network (CAN) data link is used on the engine to allow the ECM to communicate with various intelligent control and I/O devices. The spark plugs are driven by the ECM, via ignition transformers at each cylinder.Global CAN data link is used to connect the ECM to other devices. The devices include Caterpillar® Product Link™ telematics system, optional Cat control panels, and the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) service tool. A global data link is also available for connection to a customer CAN network.Refer to the respective Operation and Maintenance Manual and engine Schematic for individual electrical system component locations on the engine.

Power Supply Requirements
The G3600 A4 control system uses customer provided 24 VDC for control power. 24 VDC +/- 2 VDC should be provided to the engine terminals under all operating conditions. Current (amperage) requirements for the engine and optional control panels are listed below.General Power Requirements
Power supply current capability:
20 A minimum, maximum ripple voltage of 150 mVThe steady state amperage draws of an operating engine and control panels are approximately:
G3600 A4 with Product Link – 5.8 A – Engine running
G3600 A4 with Product Link – 3.5 A – Engine not running, keyswitch input ON
HMI ( 20.3 cm (8.00 inch)) – 0.9 AHuman Machine Interface (HMI) Panel
The main functions of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) are listed below:
Sending start and stop signals to the engine
Providing visual indications when warning or shutdown events occur
Displaying engine information
Displaying Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) and Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) information for events
Programming set points in the Engine ECM for Monitoring and Configurations
Viewing Histograms from the Engine ECM
Downloading Product Status Reports
Viewing Snapshot Data from the ECM
Data Logging Engine ECM Parameters
Performing Service Tests
