Troubleshooting Test Steps Value Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
B. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
C. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: A -6 code for a NOx sensor is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A -5 code for a NOx sensor is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
2. Check the NOx Sensor Circuit
A. Turn the keyswitch to Off.
B. Disconnect the NOx sensor with the active -6 code.
C. Turn the keyswitch to on.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the -6 code.
F. Turn the keyswitch to off.
Note: It is normal to have a -9 data link code active with the NOx sensor disconnected.
Codes
Result: A -6 code remained active. There is a short in the wiring harness between the A6 Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the NOx sensor power supply.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
Result: A -6 code is no longer active. The wiring harness is OK.
Repair: Replace the NOx sensor. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS8151, NOx Sensors Handling and Installation Procedures. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
3. Check the NOx Sensor Circuit
A. Turn the keyswitch to Off.
B. Disconnect the NOx sensor with the active -5 code.
C. Turn the keyswitch to on.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the -5 code.
F. Turn the keyswitch to off.
Note: It is normal to have a -9 data link code active with the NOx sensor disconnected.
Codes
Result: A -5 code remained active. There is a short in the Battery+ wiring between the ECM and the NOx sensor power supply.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
Result: A -5 code is no longer active. The wiring harness is OK.
Repair: Replace the NOx sensor. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS8151, NOx Sensors Handling and Installation Procedures. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service. If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
