Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Turn the battery disconnect switch to OFF.
B. Thoroughly inspect the electrical connectors and relays. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the proper procedure for inspecting system wiring.
C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
D. Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
E. Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.
Note: The next steps are for the A4 ECM only.
F. Check each of the fuses at the low current power distribution panel that are associated with the circuit. At the high current power distribution panel, ensure that the main circuit breaker has not been thrown.
Note: Replace any fuses that are blown. If necessary, reset the main circuit breaker.
Connectors
Results: The harness and wiring are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2
Results: There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.
2. Check for Power to the Low Current Power Distribution Panel (A4 ECM Only)
A. Check the breakers for the primary and secondary ECM, primary and secondary keyswitch, and auxiliary circuits. Ensure that none of the circuit breakers are tripped. Correct any problem that is discovered.
B. Check the main circuit breaker at the high current power distribution panel. Ensure that the circuit breaker is not thrown. If necessary, reset the circuit breaker.
C. Turn the battery disconnect switch to ON.
D. At the terminal lugs for the supply voltage to the low current power distribution panel, measure the voltage between the terminals.
E. The correct voltage is 24 3 VDC.
F. Turn the battery disconnect switch to OFF.
24 3 VDC.
Results: The correct voltage is provided to the low current power distribution panel and the breakers are in good repair.
The low current power distribution panel is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3
Results: The correct voltage is not provided to the low current power distribution panel or the breakers are not in good repair.
Repair: If battery voltage is not present at the terminal connections for the battery power to the panel, check the condition of the batteries. Ensure that each battery can pass a load test. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9249, "Use of 4C-4911 Battery Load Tester for 6, 8 V and 12 V Lead Acid Batteries" for details.
If the batteries are in good repair, trace the problem back to the high current power distribution panel. Perform the necessary repairs to the harness and/or the electrical components. Verify that the original problem is resolved.
3. Check for Diagnostic Codes that are Active or Logged
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Restore electrical power to the engine ECM.
C. Monitor the active diagnostic code and the logged diagnostic codes on Cat ET.
D. Wait at least 30 seconds in order for diagnostic codes to become active.
E. Determine if one of the following diagnostic codes is active:
- 168-0
- 168-1
- 168-2
- 1834-2
F. Turn the battery disconnect switch to OFF.
Codes
Results: None of the diagnostic codes are active or logged, but there is a problem related to the power mode circuit.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
Results: At least one of these codes are active:
- 168-0
- 168-1
- 168-2
There is an active code that is related to the battery power to the ECM.
Proceed to Test Step 4
4. Check the Control Circuit and the Secondary Circuit for the Hard Stop Relay at the Low Current Power Distribution Panel
A. Turn the battery disconnect switch to ON.
B. Ensure that the emergency stop switches are in RUN.
C. Fabricate two jumper wires that are long enough to create a test circuit across the connector sockets for the appropriate hard stop relay. Crimp spade terminals to one end of each of the jumper wires.
D. Remove the ECM relay from the low current power distribution panel.
E. Use the jumper wires and a multimeter to check for voltage at the socket connector for the relay between terminal 30 (battery power) and terminal 85 (return).
The correct voltage is 24 3 VDC.
F. Use the jumper wires and a multimeter to check for voltage at the socket connector for the relay between terminal 86 (control coil volt
