Fuel System
FUEL SYSTEM SCHEMATIC
1. Fuel tank. 2. Tank shutoff valve. 3. Precombustion chamber. 4. Fuel injection pump. 5. Fuel manifold. 6. Bleed orifice. 7. Check valve. 8. Fuel transfer pump. 9. Secondary fuel filter. 10. Primary fuel filter. 11. Fuel priming pump. 12. Check valve (Serial Nos. 98S1598 and 98S1645-Up only). 13. Fuel transfer pump relief valve. There is one fuel injection pump and one fuel injection valve for each cylinder. The fuel injection pumps are located in the fuel injection pump housing. The fuel injection valves are located in the precombustion chambers. When the engine is running, fuel is pulled from the fuel tank through the fuel supply line and the primary fuel filter (10) by the fuel transfer pump (8). The fuel is then pushed to secondary fuel filters (9), and into the fuel filter housing. A bleed orifice (6) in the fuel filter housing cover vents air in the system through a line back to the fuel tank (1). Fuel from the fuel filter housing goes through a line to fuel manifold (5) of the fuel injection pump housing. The fuel manifold supplies fuel to each fuel injection pump.Individual fuel injection lines carry fuel from the fuel injection pumps to each cylinder. One section of line connects between the fuel injection pump and an adapter on the camshaft housing. Another section of line on the inside of the camshaft housing connects between the adapter and the fuel injection valve in the precombustion chamber (3).There is no bleed orifice or valve installed on the fuel injection pump housing to vent air from this part of the fuel system. Air trapped in the fuel lines can be vented by loosening the fuel line nuts where they connect to the adapters in the camshaft housing. Air can then be vented by using the fuel priming pump.Fuel priming pump (11) is used before the engine is started to put pressure in the fuel system and to vent air from the system. A check valve (7) located in the fuel transfer pump adapter housing will let fuel go around the fuel transfer pump when the priming pump is in use.The fuel filters and priming pump are located in a compartment at the rear of the fuel tank. The fuel transfer pump is mounted on an adapter on the fuel injection pump housing and is driven by a shaft connected to the fuel injection pump camshaft. The fuel transfer pump relief valve (13) is located in the cover of the pump. The fuel pump camshaft is driven by timing gears located inside a cover at the rear of the engine. A drive gear at the rear of the fuel injection pump housing drives a speed sensing, variable timing unit which is connected to the fuel pump camshaft through a spline that slides. This variable timing unit gives easier starting and smooth low speed operation. It will also advance timing as engine speed increases to give correct engine operating efficiency. Engines with Serial Nos. 98S1645-Up (including 98S1598) have a check valve (12) in the fuel outlet line of the fuel priming pump (11). The check valve prevents fuel leakage when the lines are disconnected.Fuel Injection Pump
FUEL INJECTION PUMP
1. Check valve. 2. Inlet passage. 3. Spring. 4. Lubrication passage (fuel). 5. Pump plunger. 6. Fuel passage. 7. Fuel passage. 8. Fuel rack. 9. Lubrication passage (oil). 10. Gear segment. 11. Pump Lifter. 12. Camshaft lobe.Fuel enters the fuel injection pump housing through fuel passage (6) and enters the fuel injection pump body through the inlet passage (2). The injection pump plungers (5) and the lifters (11) are lifted by the cam lobes (12) on the camshaft and always make a full stroke. The lifters are held against the cam lobes by the springs (3). Each pump measures the amount of fuel to be injected into its respective cylinder and forces it out the fuel injection nozzle. The quantity of fuel sent to the fuel injection valve is changed by the rotation of the plunger in the barrel. The plunger is turned by the governor action through the fuel rack (8) which turns the gear segment (10) on the bottom of the pump plunger. Passage (4) provides fuel to give lubrication to the pump plunger.Fuel Injection Valve
High pressure fuel from the fuel injection pumps is moved through the fuel injection lines to the fuel injection valves. As high pressure fuel enters the nozzle assembly, the check valve in the nozzle opens and permits the fuel to enter the precombustion chamber. The fuel injection valve gives the correct characteristics (spray pattern) for good fuel combustion.
FUEL INJECTION VALVE CROSS SECTION
1. Fuel line nut. 2. O-ring seal. 3. Nut. 4. Body. 5. Union. 6. O-ring seal. 7. Nozzle assembly. 8. Glow plug. 9. Precombustion chamber.Variable Timing Unit
The variable timing unit connects the fuel injection pump camshaft to the engine rear timing gears. The variable timing unit will "advance" (increase) the timing with an increase in engine rpm. The timing unit will "advance" (increase) the timing from 8° BTC at low idle to 19° BTC at high idle.During engine low rpm operation, the flyweights (8) force is not enough to become greater than the force of control valve spring (3) and move control valve (7) to the closed position. Oil flows through the power piston bore (2).
LOW RPM POSITION
1. Power piston. 2. Power piston bore. 3. Control valve spring. 4. Power piston return spring. 5. Oil inlet passage. 6. Drain passage. 7. Control valve. 8. Flyweights. 9. Shaft assembly. As the engine rpm increases, the force of flyweights (8) becomes greater than the force of control valve spring (3) and moves control valve (7) to the closed position, which will close oil drain passage (6). Oil with pressure in power piston bore (2) becomes greater than the force of spring (4) and moves power piston (1) out. This causes the fuel injection pump camshaft to turn a small amount in relation to the shaft (9) of the variable timing unit. Any movement out
