Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that the fluids are contained during performance of the inspection, the maintenance, the testing, the adjusting and the repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling of the any components containing fluids. Refer to the "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for the tools and the supplies suitable to collect and contain any of the fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of the fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot engine oil can cause personal injury if it contacts the skin. Use caution when draining the oil.
1. Open the hood assembly, and lock it in the "Open" position. 2. Loosen locknut (1) and bolt (2) to drain the oil filter and the oil filter base assembly.3. Loosen hose clamp (3), and remove drain hose (4). 4. Remove two nuts (4) and the washers.5. Remove six bolts (5) and the washers. Place a drain pan under the engine oil filter and the oil filter base. During the removal, a small amount of oil will drain from the engine oil filter and the engine oil filter base.6. Remove the engine oil filter and the oil filter base as a unit. Check O-rings for wear or damage. Replace if necessary. Check the oil filter base for clogging and cracks. The following steps are for the installation of the engine oil filter and the oil filter base.7. For the installation of the engine oil filter and the oil filter base, reverse the removal steps. Apply Glycerinto O-rings (4) (not shown) before installation of the oil filter base to the plate.8. If the engine oil filter was removed, apply engine oil to the gasket when installing filter. When the gasket contacts the base, tighten 3/4 to 1 turn more. Use Tool (A) if the oil filter is to be removed. Refer to the Topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation and Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the engine oil.9. Check the oil level in the engine. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.Disassemble & Assemble Engine Oil Filter & Oil Filter Base
Start By:a. remove engine oil filter and oil filter base 1. Position oil filter base (1) and oil filter (2) on a suitable work bench. 2. Use Tool (A) to remove oil filter (2) from oil filter base (1). Check the oil filter base for clogging and cracks. Replace if necessary.3. Check gasket (8) for wear or damage. Replace oil filter (2). Replace the gasket and the oil filter with new replacement parts. 4. Remove plug (3), spring (6), piston (4), pressure relief valve (7) and bushing (5) from the oil filter base. The following steps are for the assembly of the engine oil filter and the oil filter base. Check the oil filter base for clogging and cracks. Check the gasket for wear or damage. Use new parts for replacements.5. Install plug (3), spring (6), piston (4), pressure relief valve (7) and bushing (5) to the oil filter base.6. Apply engine oil to the gasket when installing the engine oil filter. When the gasket contacts the filter base, tighten 3/4 to 1 turn more.End By:a. install engine oil filter and oil filter base
