Walk-Around Inspection
For maximum service life of your engine, thoroughly inspect the installation before starting the engine. Look for such items as oil or coolant leaks, loose bolts, worn belts and trash build-up. Remove trash build-up and have repairs made as needed.Perform all periodic (Daily) maintenance before starting the engine. Make a walk-around inspection of the installation. It only takes a few minutes to make minor corrections. This can prevent major repairs at a later date.
Each time any significant quantity of oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near the engine it should be cleaned up. Accumulated grease and oil on an engine or platform is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high pressure water or each time any significant quantity of oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near an engine and working area.
Make sure the barring device is disengaged before starting the engine. The engine is equipped with barring interlock protection.
Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside and ensure piping is connected properly.
Starting Information
For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, make provision to shut down the engine should a runaway (overspeed) occur. This may be accomplished by cutting off the air and fuel supply to the engine.
Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a DO NOT OPERATE or similar warning tag attached to the start switch or controls. The operator must be satisfied that no one will be endangered before and when starting the engine. If the engine has not been run for several weeks, fuel may have drained and allowed air into the filter housing. Also, when fuel filters have been changed, some air space will be left in the housing. In these instances, prime the fuel system.Refer to Priming the Fuel System in this publication for more information. The engine must be prelubed before engine cranking or barring and is especially important if the engine has not been run for an extended period of time, such as after shipping, storage, during initial installation and alignment of driven equipment.
Unaided starting can be accomplished down to a temperature of 0°C (32°F). If a potential for lower starting temperature exists, consult your Caterpillar dealer.
Heating of jacket water and crankcase oil is required to assist starting in temperatures below 0°C (32°F). An additional air tank volume and/or higher pressure (or an extra battery capacity for electric starting) is required to start the engine at colder temperatures. Refer to oil, fuel and air intake recommendations in this manual for additional information. The two starting systems available for the 3600 Engines are air starting motors, turbine air motors or electric starting motors.Air Starting (If Equipped)
The air starting motors require a minimum of 825 kPa (120 psi) air pressure to operate properly and start the engine. The maximum air pressure must not exceed 1550 kPa (225 psi). The normal air pressure should be approximately 965 kPa (140 psi). The turbine air motors allow a minimum of 620 kPa (90 psi). The air shutoff cylinder (if equipped) has a separate air supply tank so that air is always available to start the engine. The reservoir has a pressure gage to show the reservoir condition. The necessary pressure to operate the air cylinder to the start position is 207 kPa (30 psi).1. Open and close the drain valve on the bottom of the air tank to drain condensation and lube fluid carryover.2. Check the air supply pressure. 3. If equipped with an air operated prelube system, check the lubricant level in the prelube pump lubricator. Keep the bowl at least half full and add lubricant (engine oil or diesel fuel), if necessary. The air starting motor air supply should be free of dirt and water. A lubricator should be used with the starting system. Use 10 weight non-detergent engine oil when ambient temperature is above 0°C (32°F) or diesel fuel at temperatures below 0°C (32°F). 4. Set the engine Start-Stop switch to the middle position. The switch is located on the gauge panel.5. If the fuel filters have been changed or the engine has been shut down for more than 48 hours, engage the electric fuel prime switch (if equipped) for 2 minutes, then release. If the engine is equipped with manual fuel prime system, turn the pump until the engine is filled with fuel. 6. Engage
