Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Breaker in the Dosing Cabinet
A. Remove the cover to access the AC DEF tank heater power supply circuit breaker.
B. Verify that the AC breaker is in the ON position.
Breaker
Result: The AC DEF tank heater power supply circuit breaker is in the ON position.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The AC DEF tank heater power supply circuit breaker is not in the on position.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Place the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Breaker in the ON Position
Breaker
Result: The AC DEF tank heater power supply circuit breaker reset.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The AC DEF tank heater power supply circuit breaker did not reset or immediately trips.
Repair: Troubleshoot AC DEF tank heater power supply circuit.
4. Operate the Engine
A. Remove electrical power from the engine for at least one minute.
B. Apply electrical power to the engine.
C. Start the Engine.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the following:
-Codes
Codes
Result: A code is not active.
Return to service.
Result: An 854-2 code becomes active while running the engine and the breaker does not trip.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the wiring to the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply monitoring breaker that is mechanically linked to the AC DEF Tank Heater power supply breaker.
A. Removes AC and DC power from the engine and aftertreatment systems.
B.Disconnect the J1 connector from the SCR controller in the dosing cabinet.
C. Place the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Breaker in the ON position.
D. Measure resistance between the following pins:
-J1-40
-J1–18
E. Place the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Breaker in the OFF position.
F. Measure resistance between the following pins:
-J1-41
-J1-18
Ohms Result: Both circuit checks indicated less than 10 ohms of resistance.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: One or both circuit checks indicated more than 10 ohms of resistance.
Troubleshoot an open circuit on the wiring harness between the SCR controller and the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Monitoring Breaker.
6. Check wiring between the SCR controller and the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Monitoring Breaker for a short circuit to ground or pin to pin short.
A. Measure resistance between J1-40, J1–41, and J1–18 and a known good ground.
B. Measure resistance between J1-40, J1-41, and J1-18 and all other pins on the J1 connector.
Expect to have continuity between J1-40 and J1-18 when the breaker is in ON position.
Expect to have continuity between J1-41 and J1-18 when the breaker is in the OFF position.
Ohms Result: The resistance value is less than 100K ohms on any of the three wires checked.
A short circuit to ground or wire to wire short in the wiring harness has been detected.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness as necessary.
Result:The resistance value is more than 100K ohms between all three pins and a known good ground and all other pins on the J1 connector.
Repair: Replace the AC DEF Tank Heater Power Supply Circuit breaker and proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Operate the Engine
A. Remove electrical power from the engine for at least one minute.
B. Apply electrical power to the engine.
C. Start the Engine.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the following:
-854-2
-4279-2
Codes
Result: A code is not active.
Return to service.
