Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. Fuel system should be primed prior to starting the engine.
Note: Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels. Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position. Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the fluid system.

Open drain (1) on water separator bowl (2). Allow the water and the fuel to drain into a suitable container. Close the drain.

Use Tooling (A) in order to remove filter element (3) and water separator bowl (2) from primary fuel filter base (4) .
Remove water separator bowl (2) from filter element (3). Remove the O-ring.Note: The water separator bowl is reusable. Do not discard the water separator bowl.
Remove two fuel lines (5) and two O-rings from primary fuel filter base (4) .
Remove two bolts (6), the washers, and the nuts that secure primary fuel filter base (4) to mounting assembly (7) .Installation Procedure

A     2P-8250     Filter Strap Wrench     1    Note: Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement. Lubricate O-rings with clean diesel fuel or an appropriate lubricant.

Position primary fuel filter base (4) to mounting assembly (7). Install two bolts (6), the washers, and the nuts.
Install two O-rings and connect two fuel lines (5) to primary fuel filter base (4) .
Install the O-ring to water separator bowl (2). Spin the water separator bowl onto new filter element (3) by hand until the water separator bowl is snug. Do not use tools to tighten the water separator bowl.
Install filter element (3) and water separator bowl (2) onto primary fuel filter base (4). Use Tooling (A) in order to tighten the filter element. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Primary Filter - Clean/Inspect/Replace" .
Prime the fuel system in order to fill the water separator element with fuel. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
