Prelubrication

Manual prelube pump
Both the engine and the generator are equipped with a manual prelube pump. Use of the pumps before starting the engine and before activating the generator provides lubrication to internal components. Use these pumps if the generator set has not been operated for more than 24 hours. This helps to reduce friction and wear on the bearings and on other moving parts. To operate the manual prelube pump for the generator, crank the handle in a clockwise direction for one minute or until the lube oil flows at both of the sight glasses for the generator. To operate the manual prelube pump for the engine, crank the handle in a clockwise direction for one minute.Barring Motor
The engine is equipped with a barring motor. If the engine has not been operated within the last 24 hours, use the barring motor to verify that the engine turns freely. Engaging the barring motor automatically disables the air starter.
The normal position of the handle for the barring motor is at approximately twelve o'clock. Move the handle to the three o'clock position in order to engage the barring motor.
Operate the barring motor for approximately 15 seconds or one complete revolution.
Return the handle to the twelve o'clock position in order to disengage the barring motor and enable the air starting system. Remote Starting
When the engine control switch is in the "DGCP START ENABLE" position, the engine can be started at any time from a remote location. To avoid personal injury, always remain clear of the engine when the engine control switch is in the "DGCP START ENABLE" position.
Illustration 3 g00632293
Engine control switch in the "DGCP START ENABLE" position
For remote starting, place the engine control switch in the "DGCP START ENABLE" position. This allows the engine to be started with the diesel generator control panel (DGCP) from a remote location. The engine will start when the remote start/stop initiate contact is closed.Manual Starting
For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, and for start-up of an engine that has been serviced, make provision to shut the engine off should an overspeed occur. This may be accomplished by shutting off the air and/or fuel supply to the engine.
Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a "DO NOT OPERATE" warning tag or a similar warning tag attached to the start switch or to the controls.Ensure that no one will be endangered before the engine is started and when the engine is started.
Perform all of the procedures that are described in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Before Starting Engine" topic (Operation Section).
Ensure that the main circuit for the generator is open.

"BLACKSTART" push button and engine control switch in the "BLACKSTART ENABLE" position
Turn the engine control switch to the "BLACKSTART ENABLE" position.
Do not engage the starting motor when flywheel is turning. Do not start the engine under load.If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch or button and wait two minutes to allow the starting motor to cool before attempting to start the engine again.
When the green "BLACK START" push button is illuminated, press the push button in order to start the engine. The ECM will allow the engine to be operated at rated rpm when the oil pressure sensors indicate that the oil pressure is sufficient.Overcrank
The crank cycle is the amount of time for engagement of the starting motor. This also includes the amount of time for cooling of the starting motor between crank cycles. The crank cycle and the number of crank cycles are programmable. If the engine does not start within the number of crank cycles that are programmed, the fuel system is disabled. No indication of an overcrank is provided. If an overcrank occurs, the ECM must be reset before starting can be attempted. To reset the ECM, turn the engine control switch to the "OFF/RESET" position.
