Coolant In Lubrication OilProbable Cause
Failure Of Oil Cooler Core Install a new core for the oil cooler.
Failure Of Cylinder Head Gasket Install a new cylinder head gasket. Tighten the bolts holding the cylinder head, according to the Specifications.
Crack Or Defect In Cylinder Head Install a new cylinder head.
Crack Or Defect In Cylinder Block Install a new cylinder block.
Failure Of Front Cover Gasket Install a new front cover gasket.
Failure Of Seals For Cylinder Liners Make a replacement of seals.
Water Pump Weep Hole Obstruction, Coupled With Defect In Water Pump Water Seal Free water pump weep hole of obstruction and replace water seal.Problem 2.
Engine Has Low Oil PressureProbable Cause
Defect In Oil Pressure Gauge Install new gauge.
Dirty Oil Filter Or Oil Cooler Check the operation of bypass valve for the filter. Install new oil filter elements if needed.Clean or install new oil cooler core. Remove dirty oil from engine. Put clean oil in engine.
Diesel Fuel In Lubrication Oil Find the place where diesel fuel gets into the lubrication oil. Make repairs as needed. Remove the lubrication oil that contains diesel fuel. Install a new oil filter element. Put clean oil in the engine.
Too Much Clearance Between Rocker Arm Shaft And Rocker Arms Check lubrication in valve compartment. Install new parts as necessary.
Oil Pump Suction Pipe Has A Defect Replacement of pipe is needed.
Relief Valve For Oil Pump Does Not Operate Correctly Clean valve and housing. Install new parts as necessary.
Oil Pump Has A Defect Make repair or replacement of oil pump if necessary.
Too Much Clearance Between Crankshaft And Crankshaft Bearings Check the oil filter for correct operation. Install new parts if necessary.
Too Much Clearance Between Camshaft And Camshaft Bearings Install new camshaft and camshaft bearings if necessary.
Too Much Bearing Clearance For Idler Gear Inspect bearings and make replacements as necessary.
Orifices For Piston Cooling Not Installed Install piston cooling orifices.Problem 3.
Engine Uses Too Much Lubrication OilProbable Cause
Too Much Lubrication Oil In Engine Remove extra oil. Find where extra oil comes from. Put correct amount of oil in engine. Do not put too much oil in engine.
Oil Leaks Find all oil leaks. Make repairs as needed.
Oil Temperature Is Too High Check operation of oil cooler. Install new parts if necessary. Clean the core of the oil cooler. Check oil cooler bypass valve.
Too Much Oil To Intake Valve Guides Refer to Testing and Adjusting , "Air Inlet and Exhaust System", "Troubleshooting", "Oil At The Exhaust".
Worn Valve Guides Refer to Testing and Adjusting , "Air Inlet and Exhaust System", "Troubleshooting", "Oil At The Exhaust".
Worn Piston Rings Install new parts as necessary
Failure Of Turbocharger Oil Seal Inspect turbocharger and repair if necessary.Introduction
One of the problems in the list that follows will generally be an indication of a problem in the lubrication system for the engine.
Too much oil consumption
Low oil pressure
High oil pressure
Too much bearing wear
Increased oil temperature Excessive Oil Consumption
Oil Leakage On Outside Of Engine
Check for leakage at the seals at each end of the crankshaft. Look for leakage at the oil pan gasket and all lubrication system connections. Look for any oil that may be leaking from the crankcase breather. This oil leakage can be caused by combustion gas leakage around the pistons. A dirty crankcase breather will cause high pressure in the crankcase. A dirty crankcase breather will cause the gaskets and the seals to leak. Oil Leakage Into Combustion Area Of Cylinders
Oil leakage into the combustion area of the cylinders can be the cause of blue smoke. There are four possible ways for oil leakage into the combustion area of the cylinders:
Oil leakage between worn valve guides and valve stems
Worn components or damaged components (pistons, piston rings, or dirty oil return holes)
Incorrect installation of the compression ring and/or the intermediate ring
Oil leakage past the seal rings in the impeller end of the turbocharger shaftExcessive oil consumption can also be the result if oil with the wrong viscosity is used. Oil with a thin viscosity can be caused by fuel leakage into the crankcase or by increased engine temperature.Measuring Engine Oil Pressure
An oil pressure gauge that has a defect can give an indication of low oil pressure.

1U-5470 Engine Pressure Group
The 1U-5470 Engine Pressure Group measures the oil pressure in the system. This tool group has a gauge that monitors the oil pressure inside the oil manifold.Note: Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8524 for more information on using the 1U-5470 Engine Pressure Group.Note: Although Special Instruction, SEHS8524 was written for the 6V-9450 Engine Pressure Gp, this tool manual also pertains to the 1U-5470 Engine Pressure Group.
Be sure that the engine is filled to the correct level with SAE 10W-30 oil. The information in the engine oil pressure graph is invalid for other oil viscosities.

(1) Pressure test location.
Connect the 1U-5470 Engine Pressure Group to the main oil manifold at location (1).
Obtain the normal operating temperature of the engine by operating the engine.
Keep the oil temperature constant with the engine at the rated rpm, and read the pressure gauge. Note: The engine oil temperature should not exceed 115°C (239°F).
Locate the point that intersects the line for the engine rpm and for the oil pressure on the engine oil pressure graph.

The results must above the line on the chart. A problem exists when the results fall below the line on the chart. Correct the problem. Engine failure or a reduction in engine life can be the result if engine operation is continued with oil manifold pressure below this line. Note: A record of engine oil pressure can be used as an indication of possible engine problems or damage. A possible problem could exist if the oil pressure suddenly decreases below 44 kPa (6 psi) and the oil pressure is above the line.
