Table 1
Event Code
Description    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
E095 Fuel Filter Restriction Warning     The fuel filter differential pressure switch opens.     The code is active and the code is logged.    The fuel filter differential pressure switch is used to monitor the differential pressure across the filter element. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) will alert the operator of a restriction in the fuel filter. Use this test in order to verify that the fuel filter differential pressure switch is operating correctly.

SchematicTest Step 1. Replace the Fuel Filter Element
Replace the fuel filter element.Expected Result:The E095 event code is no longer active. Results:
OK - The E095 event code is no longer active.STOP
Not OK - The fuel filter element was replaced. The E095 event code is still active. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Location of ECM connectors
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector. Thoroughly inspect the connectors for the fuel filter differential pressure switch. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".

P1 ECM connector (P1-15) Fuel filter differential pressure (P1-35) Return
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector and the sensor connectors that are associated with the active diagnostic code.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasions and for pinch points from the connectors back to the ECM.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 3. Check the Switch Circuit
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the connector for the fuel filter differential pressure switch.
Install a wire jumper between the terminals of the connector for the fuel filter differential pressure switch. Install the wire jumper on the harness side of the connector.
Start the engine. Increase the engine speed to high idle.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any active diagnostic codes.Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
Check for an event code for the engine fuel filter restriction.Expected Result:The event code is not active. Results:
OK - The event code is not active. The wiring between the connector and the ECM is OK.Repair: Check for a plugged fuel filter. If the fuel filter is OK, temporarily replace the fuel filter differential pressure switch. Verify that the problem is resolved before permanently replacing the fuel filter differential pressure switch.STOP
Not OK - The event code is still active. There is an open circuit in the wiring for the fuel filter differential pressure switch between the connector and the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check the ECM
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the J1/P1 ECM connector.
Install a jumper wire with Deutsch sockets on each end into the socket for the signal wire of the fuel filter differential pressure switch.
Install a wire jumper between the wire jumper in the socket for the return wire of the fuel filter differential pressure switch.
Short the jumper wires for the fuel filter differential pressure switch together.
Reconnect the ECM connector.
Start the engine. Increase the engine speed to high idle.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any active diagnostic codes.Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
Remove the short between the jumper wires for the fuel filter differential pressure switch.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any active diagnostic codes.Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.Expected Result:The event code is not active when the jumper wires are shorted together. The event code is active when the jumper wires are not shorted together. Results:
OK - The ECM detects the open and the short.Repair: There is an open or a short in the wiring between the connector for the fuel filter differential pressure switch and the ECM. Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Check the harness connector to the fuel filter differential pressure switch for a good connection.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
Not OK - The ECM does not detect the open or the short.Repair: Replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM - Replace". Verify that the problem is resolved.STOP
